I could’ve got one of my brothers killed, and I’d never forgive myself. But I couldn’t help it. I got distracted by what was happening with Sarah.
I’m an idiot.
My brothers surround me, waiting for me to say what’s next.
“Where are the prospects?” I ask my VP.
He scans our surroundings and finds each one, giving them a brief whistle to call them in.
I can tell everyone is thinkingwhat the fuck happened in there? But no one will ask a thing. They know better. They’ll have to wait and see if the story breaks out later.
I don’t think it will.
“Pretty boy! Come on over.” He hates when I call him that, especially around the MC. He approaches me, and as soon as he gets near us I say, “Give us a minute, boys.”
“You heard him. Let’s start to wrap this shit up!” my VP says. He gets it.
“What’s up?” Carter asks, and I start to tell him what happened with Sarah over seven thousand miles away from here.
“Are you okay? You look pale,” I say. Carter is staring at me without blinking. The news is too much for him.
“She could’ve died.”
“I know that.”
“That’s all you have to say?”
“What else do you want me to say? Of course she could’ve died. She knows that, you know that, and I fucking know that, idiot. She went to one of the most, if not the most, unwelcoming places on Earth for women. Her life being in danger, sadly comes with that territory.” Maybe now I am cool and dandy, but when I heard everything through the earpiece I thought I was going crazy.
She’s safe now. I have to remind myself.
Carter remains silent and looks thoughtful.
“Something else on your mind?” I ask.
His stiff posture and the lack of words are dead giveaways.
“Yeah… What happens if she doesn’t make it?”
Fuck.
How did he manage to ask that question? I can’t even think about it. It fucking haunts my soul.
“She knew full well what she was getting into, and it was her call to move forward. Have you spoken to Bruno lately? Do you have his whereabouts?”
“He hasn’t called me in days.” He throws his hands in the air, exasperated.
I’m not sure that’s good.
“Well, hang tight, he has to call back eventually, right?”
“Right,” Carter utters as he starts to walk away.
“Oh, and Carter…”
He stops then turns around to look at me.
“Thanks for saving my zoned-out ass back there today.”
