I mute the mic and turn to Carter, who is using his cell. “Say it… What where you doing outside with Viking? What was more important than this? What was more important than Sarah’s wellbeing?” Now that I know Sarah’s position, I can unleash all my anger at him.
“Stop busting my balls, Rage. I had to take a fucking leak. Then Vik stopped me on my way back. It was a minute before you showed up,” he replies without looking away from his cell.
“You have a working bathroom in here. Why did you use the one outside?” I’m clenching my teeth.
“Well, I also needed to stretch my legs. There you go, that’s my sin.” He says sarcastically. “You need to stop behaving like this. She’s more than capable of taking care of herself.”
“That’s not the point!” I yell and slam my fist on my desk. He finally puts down his cellphone.
Carter looks at me and roars back, “You sound like a helicopter parent!”
Helicopter parent?
“You are sick! You know how I feel about her!” I say, feeling the disgust on my face. I can’t believe he just say that. I’m furious and my heart rate is off the charts.
“So what?”
“You calling mea parentto her sounds wrong.” Especially when my cock is painfully hard every time I hear her voice.
Fuck.
“Hey! If it keeps your dick out of her, then I’ll keep doing it.” He smiles.
Is this his mission? To stop whatever is going on between Sarah and me? Oh, I’m going to fucking kill him as soon this mission is over.
“Stay out of it,” I warn.
“You’re obsessed with her. You have to let her go, man. Once and for all.” This time he speaks without the smile. He means it.
I scoff.
A serious Carter leans on the desk. “You will get hurt. More than you can imagine. Start putting some distance between you and her. Do it before it’s too late.”
Fuck, I hate this. I hate that he’s right.
Asshole.
“We’re all grownups here, pretty boy. We all have decisions to make.” I pretend I am not worried about his warnings by looking for something on my desk, I just don’t know what yet.
“Ain’t that the truth. Speaking of which, what did you decide to do with the other thing?”
“None of your business.”
“Oh, come on! We’re playing for the same team! I’m as bored as a blind guy watching a silent movie here! I need something to do other than hearing water splashing and wind blowing through a speaker.”
I stop my fake search to focus on him again. “It’s a complicated matter.”
“That’s evasive as fuck. I can help.”
“In exchange for what?” My life has taught me not to trust people. If someone wants to be involved, that means one thing only. They need something from you. It could be money, a favor, or just to feel useful.
Carter sighs loudly. “Why does everything revolve around favors for you? Can’t it be that I want to help just because I can?”
“Not in my experience. Someone always plays an angle. Just because they are not open about it, doesn’t mean there’s isn’t one.”
“Not me. I’m doing this without expecting anything in return. You should try my philosophy for a change. Then you’ll see its results,” he says with a broad smile.
“Am I hearing this right? All of that coming from a mercenary?”
