“Bold move, that one threat might have been neutralized, but there could be more where he came from.”
“It might have been bold at the time, but I needed to prove to myself I could do this.” I turn to my left side and slide my hand under the cold sheet. “Rage. CanIask you something?”
“Shoot.”
“What happened today on the train. Was that something you expected? Is that why there was an EpiPen inside the bag? Why didn’t you warn me about it?”
“Yes, it was something I anticipated as a possibility. Human trafficking is a real problem in Europe, plus having an EpiPen is a good thing when you are going to new places for the first time in your life. You never know if you are going to have a severe allergic reaction, so it wouldn’t hurt either, and at the end, I was right.” He states this proudly, completely ignoring the question about how fucked up it is not to let me know about it.
“I just can’t look past the fact that you didn’t warn me about it.”
“Okay, here’s the thing. I won’t be able to warn you about every single possible threat when you are, not only away from me, but outside of the U.S. No one can.”
He has a point. There are a thousand ways to hurt someone, and I can’t hold him accountable for that. I also can’t keep pretending I can predict everything.
“Right. I promise I’ll keep my head in the game from now on.”
“Well you better, soldier. Now try to get some rest. You’ve got a long way to go tomorrow. Is that clear?”
“Sir, yes sir.”
I fall sleep with a smile on my face.
Chapter Twenty-Five
RAGE
The coffee machine just finished brewing. The intense scent of fresh coffee fills my nostrils.
“I’m already on the train, by the way,” says Sarah.
I pour a cup for myself, and the pretty boy does the same.
“We know.” I take the steaming cup and sitting heavily on my chair with my feet on top of the desk.
I couldn't sleep at all last night, and putting caffeine in my body is imperative. Hearing Sarah's sleepy voice a few hours ago was more difficult than I thought. All I wanted to do was curl up next to her and sleep, but no, she’s miles away from me. Alone.
Ugh!
What has this girl done to me?
“You do? How? Oh…right. The GPS.”
“Yep,” Carter adds. “Let’s try not to repeat yesterday’s mistakes, everyone.” He smirks.
“Everyone? You are referring to me, and I know it, Carter.” Sarah’s tone is hostile.
“I’m just saying, avoid any additionaltripsSnow White.”
“Oh, for God’s sake!”
I chuckle, and Carter glares at me. He behaves like an annoying but protective brother with her, but he seems nervous as well. The metal squeaking of the chair as he bounces his legs constantly while checking his cell, tells me I’m right.
I turn off the mic. Whatever this is, Sarah must stay focused on her trip, and this might worry her.
“Are you going to tell me what’s going on or not?” I inquire.
“What do you mean?” He frowns in confusion.
