"You know?” I ask, with a frown.

"Yes, of course. In fact, I was there that day.”

What?My face must say it all.

"Hey, Sarah, you need to move on. I thought you had done just that. I thought you had finally moved on with your life.”

I huff, "That's never going to happen. If you don't tell me where to find him then I'll keep digging for information, just like I've been doing for the past two years.”

"What did Rage tell you?”

I'm not sure if I can tell him. I don't want him doubting me, but by telling him and watching his reaction I may be able to tell if that intel Rage gave me is good enough to help me trace him.

"He told me that Bruno was jitterythatday and left quickly, nothing more.” But he doesn’t react.

I cannot read him, damn it.

After a few seconds of silence, he says, "He is on a mission right now and needs to focus. You know you’re a...weakness for him.”

A mission?

I am desperate, I know that. "I could help. You know I can.”

He shakes his head.

"That is not an option. Look, Sarah, I really need to go, but I promise you I'll drop by more often, unless you plan on busting my face every time I do.”

I snort a laugh. "As you wish.”

He pats my back, and it’s clear he feels sorry for me and cares at the same time. After a while, he stands and goes to the door.

He stops and turns so he can look at me once more.

"By the way, those tats are hot.”

"Thanks.” I smile at him.

He opens the door, but before he goes, he stops. "Please don't go back to that place again. You were lucky enough to get out of there alive. You have no idea who they are.”

I nod. "All right, I promise.”

He nods back and closes the door behind him.

Chapter Six

SARAH

A week goes by, and Carter’s words still echo in my mind every day.

A mission? What kind of mission?

Bruno mentioned that he was retired. Is this what is driving him away from me?

Clearly there was something in Asad’s computer, something powerful enough to trigger this, but I can’t imagine what exactly.

During the week, I get to see Jonathan a few times. We kiss often, but it feels like chewing sand. It’s something weird, not necessarily unpleasant, but not enjoyable either, because there is no spark, no energy, no chemistry between us. I think Carter’s reappearance has something to do with these feelings.

“Yeah, no shit,”Life says.
