Chapter Four
Scotty
“What do we call you?” I was staring at one of the Broks left with us. It was identical to the hellhound who protected and escorted Beelzebub, and I wasn’t sure what to make of it.
“I’m Brokorol. You may call me Brok.” He bowed as the other Brok had done when we met him.
“Oh, this won’t be confusing at all.” I glanced at the duplicate Brok. “Are you Brok, or was he Brok?”
“We are both Brok.”
I threw my hands in the air and laughed. “Okay. Well,Brok, can you track? Are you able to get a scent and then follow it to find the person it belongs to?”
“Yes, sir.”
I waited for him to give further details, but he simply stared at me. Of course my demon lover cracked up. I turned to him, begrudgingly grinning because Jay’s joy filled my soul. “Maybe we got the dumb one?”
Jay nodded, finally calming himself. “Okay. We’ll need something that belonged to Paxton De Vil so Brok here can track the little beast. Let’s go to Dearly & Son to see if they can help us.”
Jay took my hand, and we walked out of our home. When we got to Jay’s fancy car, I glanced behind me. Brok wasn’t there.
Rolling my eyes, I returned to the house and grabbed the duplicate Brok’s arm, pulling him out of the house with me. It was going to be a long day.
Brok sat in the back seat of the car, and Jay drove us to the funeral home. It would be nice to see Keir and Dash. I had missed my friends.
Jay drove behind the large building to the receiving bay. The whole time we’d been driving to Reardon, duplicate Brok hadn’t said a word. I really worried about his skills as a hellhound. Was he somehow defective because he’d been diluted from the original Brok?
We all got out of the car, and Brok sniffed the air. Suddenly, Jay and I were surrounded by five more duplicate Broks. “What’s going on?”
We were shoved to our knees as the Broks began growling and making aggressive moves toward something, but I couldn’t see what it was.
In one voice, the group of Broks yelled, “Vampire!”
Jay started laughing as he hopped up and helped me to my feet, brushing off the knees of my jeans and my palms. He pushed out of the circle of Broks and headed toward the bench where Adonis sat with an easel in front of him and a paint brush in his hand. The Broks and I followed him.
“Adonis, how are you?” Jay extended his hand for the vampire to shake.
I pushed through the circle and stepped over to Jay, also shaking Adonis’s hand. The guy was damn good-looking.
Jay elbowed me in the ribs hard enough to take my breath.Sorry, sweetheart,I thought, forgetting that our bond allowed us to hear each other’s thoughts.
It’s okay. He is hot, but you’re mine. That made me chuckle and grip Jay’s hand tighter.
“Things are pretty good. Keir’s busy. No surprise. Amelie and Trent are on vacation, and Dash is busy at the garage when he’s not helping here at the funeral home. What’s all this?” Adonis circled his finger in the direction of our identical bodyguards. I was sure it was funny to the casual observer.
I sighed. "Beelzebub sent them with us. We’re looking for Paxton De Vil. Did he leave anything behind that could be used by the hellhounds to scent him?”
The rolling garage door opened, and Keir and Dash walked out with big smiles. I moved toward them; arms opened wide. “It’s fantastic to see you.”
Jay joined me, hugging them. “Seriously, guys, how are you? How’s wedded bliss?”
Keir’s face flushed, which made me laugh a little. “It’s amazing. How about you? Are you two going to get married?”
I glanced at Jay, not exactly sure what to say.
“We’re bonded. That’s more than married. Our existence is tied to each other. If he dies, I die.”
That was something I hadn’t thought about. Back in my day, men couldn’t get married, and I had no family left to even care. Was that something I’d miss? I’d been to Keir and Dash’s wedding. Did I want the same celebration for Jay and me?
