The successful one.
Autumn kept the comment to herself, though bitterness was on the tip of her tongue.
“She’s been dozing off and on,” he sighed, one hand stuffed in his pants pocket. “I’m planning for her to be sent back to Seattle for an eye procedure.”
“That won’t be necessary.”
His eyes narrowed on Autumn. “Why not?”
“Do you know why she’s here?”
“On business.”
Autumn raised an eyebrow, “Really? Is that what she told you?”
“What are you talking about?” David’s jaw clenched. When she didn’t elaborate, he held on to the footboard. His knuckles turned white from the force of his clenched fingers on the piece of plastic. “Why the hell else would she be here?”
“Why don’t we wait and ask her?”
They didn’t have to wait long.
Minutes later, the lashes of Scarlett’s good eye fluttered open. It was dilated from the painkillers moving through her body. Scarlett groaned, then rolled and grimaced when she looked down to see the IV in her arm.
“It wasn’t a dream then,” she muttered.
“What did you do, Scarlett?” Autumn asked and stood by the side of the bed. “For that matter, what did you say to make him attack you?”
“What is your sister talking about, Scarlett? You know who attacked you?”
Scarlett looked between her father and Autumn. Her lips twitched. “Family reunion just for good ‘ol me?”
Autumn’s lips thinned. “This isn’t a joke, Scarlett. Two women are dead because of what you and Elijah have done. And you could have become a third victim.”
“Fourth,” Scarlett declared, “And for the record, I thought I was dead.”
“Fourth?” Her back stiffened, “What do you mean byfourth?”
“Oh, don’t you know? Lydia Esposito would have died if it wasn’t for me.”
Lydia Esposito was stupid for going along with her damned auction.
Autumn didn’t even hear about the near murder. Did Nico know?
“It was because of you.”
Autumn focused on Scarlett. “I’m sorry?”
“You left, and he became angry. He didn’t say those words, but I knew when he came back from stalking you at lover boy’s apartment, something was off.” Scarlett looked over Autumn’s shoulder. “He nearly slit that bitch’s throat. If it weren’t for me, she’d be dead by now.” Scarlett’s lips pulled down in a pout. “If I knew he was going to turn on me, I would have stopped helping him a long time ago.”
“Would someone please clue me in on what the hell Scar is talking about?”
Their father’s angry words made Autumn turn to him.
He wanted to know the truth.
Fine.
“Your daughter has been going on a killing spree in this city with Elijah Winters.”
