She could insist, but Luna would consider it interrogating, and Autumn didn’t want to anger the woman who was forthcoming with information about the man she…Loved?
Autumn realized, yes. She loved Nico Scala. She didn’t know when or how it happened, but she did love him.
“Did you ever find out who was responsible for the car accident?” Autumn asked as she played with the stem of her glass.
“We did.” That was all Luna said, as if that was the end of the conversation. Luna cleared her throat, and her lips curled into a smile. “You are as curious as a cat,Autunno.”
Autumn shrugged and smiled, “Just curious about Nico’s extended family.”
Luna raised an eyebrow. “Hmm… and you know curiosity killed the cat?”
She wasn’t able to reply as her phone rang right at that moment.
Her eyebrows drew down as she looked at the Washington number. “Hello?”
“Autumn, thank God. Where are you?” David’s worried tone droned over the line.
“Dad, I—”
“It doesn’t matter where you are. You need to come to Manhattan General right now.”
He was in New York?
“It’s going to be a while. I’m out of town at the moment.” She turned as Luna’s gaze was on her. “When did you get to New York?”
“It doesn’t matter. Your sister is in the hospital. Someone attacked her.”
“I’ll get there as soon as I can.” Autumn hung up and wrapped her arms around herself.
“Is everything alright?” Luna picked up the glasses and brought them to a sideboard. “Your father called you?”
Autumn tapped her lips. Someone attacked Scarlett. She didn’t know the details, but she knew the only one who could attack her was Elijah.
She’d had to provoke him.
“Autumn?”
Autumn looked back up. Luna crossed her arms and furrowed her eyebrows. Autumn cleared her throat. “I have to get back to New York. Something happened to my sister. I know Nico wanted me to stay, but—”
“No,” Luna pulled out her phone and brought it to her ear. She spoke in rapid Italian that even if Autumn understood the language, she wouldn’t have been able to follow the conversation. Luna hung up and muttered something else. She turned to Autumn and wrapped her in a hug. “My personal bodyguard will bring you back. Don’t worry about your things. I’ll have someone bring them to Nico’s place, okay?”
“I don’t want to cause any trouble, Luna.”
Luna’s laugh was husky, and her eyes bright. “Trouble is my middle name,Autunno. Don’t worry.”
There was a knock on the door and an older man with salt and pepper hair at his temples came in.
“Ah! Gregorio! She is ready now.”
Luna came back to Autumn and hugged her. “Everything will be okay, bella mia. And you are safe.” She leaned back and smiled.
Autumn wasn’t worried about her life. Luna had told her earlier about the hit on her life because of something Autumn had no control over. She hugged Luna back. “Thank you.”
“I will see you again,Autunno. Make no mistake about that.”
The man in the door spoke in a low tone to Luna. Again, all in Italian.
Luna responded and waved the man off.
