“Who?”

Lydia and Scala shared a look before the woman blinked and turned around. “I’m busy. Any other questions you can always call. Nico has my number.” She stopped and looked over her shoulder at Autumn. “Oh, and Miss Taylor?”

Autumn crossed her arms and raised an eyebrow in question.

Lydia grinned, “Make sure you find that fucking psychopath before my auction starts, yeah?” She didn’t give Autumn the chance to reply as she headed back the way she came, with a toss of her hair over a shoulder.

Autumn shuddered as Scala ushered her to the exit. “I can’t believe you slept with that…viper.”

“I’m pretty sure there was no sleeping involved,” he drawled.

Autumn wrinkled her nose when she got in the car. “You’re disgusting.”

Scala snickered as they pulled away from the street. He turned the radio to some classic rock. Queen admitted to his mother he killed a man and didn’t want to die. Autumn glanced over at her partner. His eyes were on the road, never once looking at her.

“So, who’s Luna?”

Scala put the brakes on suddenly, and a car behind them laid on the horn. He glanced at her, then away, “No one you need to worry about.”

Autumn studied him. Scala appeared cool and calm, but there was tension in his hands as he gripped the steering wheel.

“If it’s someone you believe can protect me from some unknown attacker, maybe—”

She didn’t get to finish her sentence as a gunshot hit the passenger window.

“Get down!” Scala shouted as he pulled open the glove compartment, and silver flashed.

Autumn watched him take the handgun out and pulled over to the side of the street. He checked the safety and looked at her. His face held no emotion, and his deep-blue-colored eyes were chips of ice. “I want you to get out and stay down. Do you hear me?”

“You have a gun in your glove box. Why do you have a gun in your glove box?” Autumn was trying to process this as she obeyed his command. “Were you ever going to mention this to me?”

“Che donna testarda!” He leaned over and pushed the door open. “Do what I say, damnit!” There was another gunshot at the car. Both he and Autumn leaned down, then Scala leaned out of his car and shot in the general direction where the other shot came from.

“Why are they shooting at us?Whois shooting at us?” Autumn’s suspect didn’t use guns, she was trying to figure everything out.

“I don’t fucking know. Just get down and be safe!”

“Why?”

Scala leaned over and kissed her hard on the lips. Autumn wasn’t expecting it, and kissed him back. Scala lifted his head and stared at her hard. “Call the fucking cops and stay down, capisci?”

Autumn blinked back at him, then nodded. She finally moved and crouched down. They parked next to a storefront. She ran inside and found someone with a nametag. “I need you to call 911! Now!”

The girl looked at her with wide eyes, “What’s going on out there? I heard gunshots!”

“That’s when you should have called in the first place,” Autumn snapped. “Call them! Now!”

Chapter 10

AfterNicomadesureAutumn was safely in the store, he looked up into the window of the abandoned building. A curtain fluttered. It was the perfect spot to shoot at his car. Nico hadn’t been expecting a sniper to target them.

To target Autumn. The shooter wasn’t targeting him. Whoever it was, they had many opportunities to shoot at him.

He should have realized it with the animosity Arturo showed Autumn. However, he couldn’t say it was his uncle.

Luna?

She wouldn’t. If it were his godmother, she’d know Nico would come for her.
