Unfortunately, I do understand why it’s there.

I frown, “Are you still bound to him?”

She shakes her head, a huge smile lighting up her features, “No. His death broke the binding.”

“Thank fuck,” I reply with relief.

I know what he did, the knowledge is there. I judged his soul. He can rot in the cells of the Luciorekis, may they torture him for eternity.

Wow. Knowledge is just spewing itself at me right now. I have no idea where it is coming from, but I'd better still fucking have it when I wake up.

If I don’t, then I’m going to be extremely fucking angry. Although I won’t be because I won’t remember, but when I do remember, I will be really angry that I was made to forget in the first place.

I expect the Voices to chastise me for getting distracted again, but they seem even quieter than usual, and I have to guess that it’s something to do with the magic that I just used. I may know that they aren’t the voices of the dead now, but that just means that I’m back to square one, and I have no idea what they are, or rather, who.

Wait.

Fuck.

My thoughts flick back to my original thought: this is a dream. What if this isn’t real? It feels real, but that’s impossible. Dreams aren’t real. Well, I think I’ve heard stories of some dreams being real, but I may just be making that up. Maybe just this new magic is real?

Ugh, my head hurts.

“We do have a problem though.” Styx says, thankfully, interrupting my inner spiral of utter ridiculousness. She continues, “If anyone finds Deliun and me in here with him, the leader of the settlement, who is very dead, then we will get blamed, and they will kill us.”

“Shit, you’re right. Okay, I have no idea how long I’ve got until I disappear again, so we need to come up with a plan quickly,” I ramble.

“The horses, if we can get to the horses, then we can escape. I’ve got a go bag,” Styx explains quickly, hope and fire once again lighting up her eyes that I’m only just realizing are gold.

Not a goldish brown, but actual gold. They’re stunning, and I have no idea how I didn’t notice before.

“I’m not going,” the other woman says in a shaky voice, “I’ll tell everyone that the stranger killed him, that’s the truth, but I won't leave.”

“Are you insane?” Styx says to her. “They will most likely kill you!”

“If I leave, I will surely die. I have no skills to speak of, I can’t hunt, and I can’t do much of anything. I promise I will protect what I’ve seen today, but I cannot come,” the woman says firmly.

Styx hesitates and then nods, “Fine.”

Now that I see them up close without the threats around, I realize that they don’t look as similar as I thought they did, and they’re certainly separating like acquaintances rather than sisters or family members.

“Go, I will stall them for as long as I can,” she tells Styx.

Styx nods and looks at me, “The stables are this way. There should still be a fair amount of chaos. So it should cover us.”

“Well, the fucker is still burning, and I have no intention of putting him out, so that should help to cover our escape. Just let me know who I can kill to keep quiet and who I can’t,” I reply and then wince slightly as I realize how blood thirsty it sounds.

“Deal,” she grins. “It’s pretty simple, really, you can kill them all.”

Yep, she is definitely my kind of person.

She moves the bed out of the way and calls on her sword to slice a small hole just big enough for us to crawl through, and then tells the other woman to put the bed back once we leave.

We squeeze through the opening and find ourselves alone, thank fuck. The screams of the supernatural that’s still on fire echo around us, and I hope it provides us with a great cover and distraction so we can escape.

I’m just going to stick with her until I get pulled back into the awake world. This is why I’m here. I think.

If it’s not, I don’t care. She wants to escape, and I’m going to help her. It’s as simple as that.
