“I really owe you.”

“Yep. But Jane, I think you owe someone else just as much.” Hal glanced at Matthew Scott now looking a lot less like a bureaucratic bully and more like a tired man just trying to do what was best for everyone.

“Aw, heck. I don’t like this at all. Before this is all over, I’m probably going to have to apologize to him.”

“Or you could just be really, really nice when you’re eventually cleared of all charges.”

Jane cringed. “I’d rather say a quick ‘sorry’ then avoid him for a while.”

But this news did serve its purpose.

Jane wouldn’t worry about Matthew Scott anymore. Knowing he was on track to find out who killed Dan Simmons made her feel better. She’d still push for answers, but she wouldn’t get in Scott’s way.

Instead, she’d do her best to help him find their Mazzuca spy. And she’d help Rapp and the team find Phillip Keiser before he struck again.

“Outstanding.” Hal brushed his hands together, having demolished the popcorn. “Now let’s go home. We can start on the video game tomorrow.”

“So soon?”

He frowned. “Yeah. And don’t even think of using work as an excuse. You owe me.”

“I know. I always pay my debts.” Thoughts of apologizing to Raine and Scott hit her hard. “Even if I would rather get a root canal.”

CHAPTER THIRTY-EIGHT

Determined to find Phillip Keiser,Monday morning, Jane and the others poured over any and all data centered around the Kaminskicrew—a good a word as any to describe the crime group.

Led by August, who had three sons. The first two by a wife who’d died and Anton by a woman who remained unnamed. Several cousins and other distantly related soldiers filled out the ranks. Henryk, the oldest son at twenty-five, and Marcel, twenty-four, helped in the strip clubs. Anton, the youngest at eighteen, tended to create chaos, though he was known to swing by the restaurants and help cook, oddly enough.

The distant Kaminski relatives and soldiers led to dead ends regarding Phillip Keiser. Rapp had arranged a police patrol around Professor Lito’s house, just in case Phillip might go there for help.

Jane wanted to talk to Phillip again. She had a feeling the guy hadn’t said all he’d had to say before the police had interrupted him.

Law enforcement had stepped up security around several of the large hospitals as well, everyone alert in case Phillip made an appearance.

Jane continued to study the victims’ files, looking for any incident that stood out, something that would have put them on Phillip’s radar. There had to be a reason other than blind misfortune that they’d been targeted. Sheknewthey weren’t random.

Frustrated at her lack of answers, she paced the large office, trying to collect her thoughts. Gina and Rapp gathered by her desk, both in casual attire for once.

“We’re going out to check on potential sightings of Keiser,” Rapp announced.

“I’m still trying to figure out how he chose his victims.” Jane stopped by Diego’s desk, and paused, curious about a name that popped up on one of his monitors.

“Call if you find something.” Gina followed Rapp out the door.

“Bossy, isn’t she?” Diego asked as he swiveled on his chair. He stopped and focused once more on the monitor to his right. “See these? Interactions our victims had with different people the week leading up to their deaths. And that’s not a for-sure timeline, because Phillip could have met with the vics before. A month, even two.” He groaned, sounding dejected. “There’s too much info. Just not enough that’s pertinent to fill in the gaps.”

“Yes, but with your help, we found out who our unsub is. That’s huge.”

“True. I did do that, didn’t I?” Diego grinned. “So, want to thank me by going out on a date this week?”

Jane blinked. “With you?”

“Why not? You’re not married. Not engaged.” He glanced at her ringless fingers. “No boyfriend?”

She frowned.

“Girlfriend? Hey, I don’t care. I’m an admirer either way.”
