"What's that?" Kadi asks.
"You can go look," Jace tells her. She's so curious by nature that she heads right over.
I give a push and it pops out.
"Eww, that's disgusting," Kadi says with a scrunched up face.
"It may be disgusting," Dr. Mac tells Kadi, "But it's what's kept your baby sister alive, fed, and full of nutrients. The placenta carries all of that from your mom, to the umbilical cord which feeds little Sydney."
"It's still gross looking."
Dr. Mac nods. "It is."
"In some cultures," Mrs. M begins, "They eat the placenta."
"Gah," Kadi comments. "No, thank you."
Mrs. M laughs. "I'll teach you about those cultures if you'd like."
Kadi nods-as does Xander. "That'd be great Mrs. M."
She laughs at Xander and Kadi grabs his hand. "We can learn together."
There's a siren and a knock at the door.
"The fuck?" Jesse mutters.
Dr. Mac stands up. "Since none of you thought to call 911, I called the hospital and told them what's going on. It's time to get Summer and Sydney thoroughly checked out, and that episiotomy sewn up."
Kadi nods. "That needs fixing."
Dr. Mac bites back a chuckle. "You sure you don't want to be a doctor?"
She shrugs. "I'm only eleven. I have time to decide for sure."
"That you do," Jace tells her as the paramedics come in and chaos begins all over again.
They lift me onto the stretcher and I just lay back and relax.
Childbirth is hell, but after seeing Sydney, I understand why we women do it time and again. It's a miracle.
