I whirl around. “What the hell are you doing here?”

Trey stands there, thumbs in his front pockets, that familiar cocky stance.

“Is that any way to greet an old friend?”

I lift my brows. “Friend?” I snort. “You’re reaching.”

It’s been nearly two years since I’ve seen him, and he’s grown into a good-looking man. Any resentment I had toward him no longer lingers. Why hold a grudge? He was a kid like me and did what teenage boys do when good girls like me don’t hang all over them… like Ella does. Freaking Ella. I wonder how hard she’s working it now that I’m not there. Even if Leo told her we were together, as in a couple, she wouldn’t care. She has her sights set on the prize.

“C’mon, Jillie. I wanted to stop by and make sure you’re okay. I know you were tight with your pops.”

I let my guard down a bit. “Please don’t tell me you’re sorry for my loss. I think I might punch you in the face if you do.”

He smirks. “Like I’d use that dried up line on you.”

I eye him up. “You’re good at ‘lines’.”

“Couple years back. Now, not so much.”

“Used them all on everyone in town, huh?” I tease.

“Ouch. Harsh.”

“Is it the truth?”

He shakes his head. “Nah. Just got tired of trying too hard.”

“I can’t believe you said that. Wow. Who are you and what have you done with Trey?” I ask in disbelief.

He shrugs a shoulder. “Remember Alicia Rhodes?”

I have to search the memory bank for that one. “The dancer from Fox Point?”

He nods. “Yeah.”

“What about her?”

“We’ve been together for about a year now.”

I can’t hide my surprise. “Wow. That’s awesome. I’m happy for you.”

He’s looking down, toeing the dirt with his boot.

“What is it?”

“She’s six months pregnant.” His eyes flick to mine and I see fear, panic, resignation.

“Holy shit!” I blurt out.

“Yeah. Holy shit is right.”

“How’dthathappen? You used to be pretty good at using protection from what I heard—you know, from the girls you cheated on me with,” I jab.

“Play nice.”

“I don’t think so. You didn’t.”

“I know it. I’m sorry. I really am.” He pauses. “The condom broke.”
