CHAPTER TWENTY

It’s the following Monday—after a weekend of tons of making out with Elan—that fate steps in.

I walk into the restroom during third period—Independent Study—and there she stands. Gianna Rothchild.

Maybe I should have spoken to Elan about this first. Maybe he’ll get upset with me. Maybe he’ll be happy. Either way, Gianna will know about Elan’s interest and whatever happens, happens.

If it’s a straight-out rejection, I’ll never mention this conversation to Elan.

“Gianna, right?” I ask as I walk in.

She nods. “Yes.”

“I have to pee so bad but there’s something I’d like to talk to you about, if you have a minute?”

She snickers. “Sure. I’m in no hurry to get back to AP English.”

I do my thing then go to wash my hands.

“Hi,” I begin.

“Hi,” she replies.

“I’m Jillian,” I introduce. “I’d shake your hand, but I’m washing them.”

Gianna smiles. “It’s okay.”

I grab a few paper towels from the dispenser and dry my hands, turning to Gianna as I do.

Wow, she is so pretty.

“This is weird, I know, but I have this friend…”

Gianna laughs. “It’s always a friend.”

I laugh back. “No, no, this time it really is a friend.”

“Okay. Who’s your friend?” she asks.

“Elan Ainsley.”

“Isn’t he the guy you’re dating?” she asks.

“Um… no. We’re just best friends.”

“Best friends who kiss?” she questions.

“Uh… when did you see us kiss?” I ask, hoping that didn’t ruin Elan’s chances, because if it did, I’m going to kick my own ass.

“Friday at the football game.”

“Oh.” It was just a quick peck. Whew. “He was trying to make me feel better about something. He’s such a wonderful guy.”

She just looks at me.

“I’m sure rumors are going around about us, but we’re not a couple. We really are just best friends—who’ve kissed a few times.”

Gianna nods. “Okay.”
