"You made a lovely couple. I'm sorry things didn't work out," he tells me, passing me a tissue.
I nod. "He was perfect. He really was."
"Then why…?"
"He isn't Xander."
"I see."
"Xander had my heart first. It just took him awhile to figure out what to do with it," I tell him with a watery smile.
"Then he better take care of it."
I nod. "Thank you, Mr. Perkins."
"You're welcome, Miss Ramirez."
I walk out the door and there's Xander leaning back against the lockers across the hall. My heart leaps and I smile.
"Hey," he says by way of greeting.
"Hey," I reply, leaning next to him.
He meets my gaze. "You all right?"
I nod and sniffle. "It was just hard."
Xan nods, his lips pressed together in a tight line. "You were with him a long time."
"Yeah."
"You love him."
"Yes," I admit.
Xan nods again, his brows furrowed. "You gave him your firsts."
He doesn't state it like a question, but it is.
"I did."
He swallows hard. "I fucked up. I'm sorry, Tera."
"I don't regret it, Xan. He was good to me. He loved me. And you needed to find your way."
"I suppose I did," he admits. "He didn't get your first kiss."
"He didn't get my heart either," I tell him.
His head jerks up and he looks at me.
"He has a piece, but my heart belongs to you, Xan. You had it first."
He pulls me to him, holding me close as he buries his face in my hair. "Thank you."
I rub his back and he straightens.
"I'm sorry you're sad, but I understand."
