With no one left to talk to, Harlow closed the conversation and dropped the phone on his chest. The living room light was still on from when Simon had woken up and rushed out of the room, the nest of blankets and pillows he’d been sleeping in scattered haphazardly across the floor. It was a far cry from his huge house in Los Angeles, with its oceanside view and its private beach, but there was heart here that was lacking back home.

Harlow followed a crack that cleaved the ceiling in half with his eyes. What laughter had lived here? What sorrow? The good and the bad, the unbearable and the incredible, all shared by three brothers trying to make it work, now divided with a father barely holding it together, and a young woman still finding her way. He’d find a way to set things right and pull them back together both for Evie, and for himself.

A shy smile. Eyes like the ocean.

Harlow closed his eyes and let himself dream.
