“If you try to keep me against my will ever again, I swear I will scream until the police come and arrest you for assaulting me. I swear to god.”
Talking down an enraged omega wasn’t part of Silas’ training. Most counselors dreamed of elevating their omega’s confidence to a level where they’d feel comfortable throwing a fit like this. For Elijah, confidence had never been the issue. He was sure of himself, but he was also sure that society had failed him. If only the transfer had been processed on Monday, Silas would have had the time to explain the situation and offer his resignation before Elijah could jump to conclusions.
Life was never that easy.
“I wanted to keep you safe from me,” Silas said. Elijah was walking away, and he showed no signs of listening. “I knew that I was falling for you, and I wanted to stop myself before it got too bad. I didn’t plan for today to happen, but I’m not upset that it did. Iwantyou, Elijah.” More than his job, more than the years invested in his education, and more than the stability he’d clung to for so long. More than anything.
Elijah did not stop walking, and Silas knew that if he went after him, Elijah was going to get vocal and make good on his threat. It defied every bit of training he’d received, but there was nothing else Silas could do. He watched as Elijah walked away.
Omegas who came to Stonecrest had no money, no connections, no education, and often no identity. If Elijah was walking away now, it meant he preferred the thought of homelessness and hopelessness to the thought of staying by Silas to work things out.
It hurt more than anything Elijah could have said.
“This is a misunderstanding,” Silas called as the distance between them grew greater. “I never wanted to give you up. Until the day I die, I’m going to be fighting for you, looking for you. I’m going to make this right.”
Elijah said nothing. With one hand held in the air, middle finger raised high, he turned the corner with a swing of his hips and disappeared into the city.
There was no force on Earth that would stop Silas from finding him and making things right, but first he needed to give Elijah some space.
