I tug my shirt over my head, and the door opens just as Rome swipes my panties up off the floor and into his pocket.

“You found her!” Vivian shifts her attention from Rome to the mostly melted milkshake on the dresser.

He swipes it off the dresser. “Don’t even think about it,” he warns, raising a brow. “It’s mine.” His lips wrap around the straw, and he walks past Vivian for the door.

Good idea. Weclearlyneed to be separated.

I catch his eye before he steps out into the hallway, and when his lip lifts into a grin, I blush like a fool.

“Aunt Tess?”

I blink and shake myself out of whatever trance I’m in. “Hmm?”

“Why is your shirt backward?”

I look down, and my face heats.

“Oh, you know.” I brush her off. “I…spilled my milkshake and had to clean it off. I guess I wasn’t paying attention when I put it back on.” I’m stuttering over my words like a toddler.

Vivian nods, taking in my quick movements as I fix my shirt. “It’s okay, Aunt Tess. I do that all the time.”

Funny she should say that.

Because I don’t.

Chapter Forty-Two

ROME

A text messagefrom Tessa flashes over the screen in my car, and I instantly become engaged. I pull over, two streets away from my house, because waiting until I get home to text her back seems too long.

Tess

So…

That’s what her message says?

I sigh and decide to let her sweat a little by acting completely nonchalant over what just happened at her parents’ house.

Try admitting you’re in love with someone and showing them just how much by taking them on top of a dresser in their childhood bedroom then walking downstairs to hang out with her family as if nothing life-altering had just occurred.

Me

Hey, what’s up?

I turn my headlights off and rest my head against the seat, phone in hand.

Tess

What do you mean “what’s up”? You know what’s up!

That’s where she’s wrong.

When it comes to her, I’m uncertain of just about everything. Besides what she calls through the radio during a race, I’m flying blind where she’s concerned.

Me

You tell me.
