“I impulsively booked a flight that lands tomorrow at six and we’ll only have like one full day together but that’s better than nothing—”

I scream in excitement and jump up and down. My heart warms thinking of Viv being so pumped she word vomits instead of using any sort of greeting.

“This will work?” She’s trying to talk over my screaming.

“OF COURSE IT WILL WORK!” I remember the meeting Ijustscheduled with Royce. No way am I letting two pieces of good news lessen each other. “I have a meeting at seven tomorrow night, but it should line up perfectly for when you get here,” I share.

After running through the short list of logistics, she asks about my hiking experience.

“Wait, you haven’t dished on the hiking yet! How was it?” She squeals but in the smoothest way. Viv is the coolest friend I’ve ever had.

“It was good.” I’m short on purpose.

“That’s it. It was good? Have you tried being any more vague?” she replies sarcastically.

“That’s not it, but we can chat about it… tomorrow… FACE TO FACE!” My voice is much too loud.

“Fine, fine. You win this one. But you share all the details tomorrow, k?”

We say our goodbyes and I’m ridiculously excited.

The smile painted on my face almost hurts. Falling back onto the bed like a trust fall, I mentally check off the good things from the last few days:

Vivian will be here in less than twenty-four hours

One of the prettiest sunsets I’ve ever seen

A pinky promise

Holland.

I’m abruptly brought back to the moment when I think about Holland on my list. My skin tingles at the thought of his lips on mine. How he didn’t flinch when I reached for his pinky the other night at sunset.

Before my body gets any tenser and frustrated, I need to get things in order for Viv.

First, I stop at the front desk and get Viv all set with a room, hoping we can be on the same floor or close to each other, but we’ll take what we can get.
