The mention brings a small smile to my face and a stab to the heart because I momentarily think about Jordan and how easily he dismissed our friendship or whatever it could’ve grown into.

“Yeah. He’s pretty great, huh?”

“Mack, I think you should go for it!” Reagan’s encouragement is exactly what I need to hear right now.

“Maybe I will.”

We spend the rest of the weekend in her room watching movies, giving each other makeovers, and doing some shopping at the mall. By the time I get home, there’s no longer anger or hurt left. Just resolution tonot dwell on something that was never there. I decide it’s time to give Trey the chance he’s asking for and hold on to the guy who tells and shows me he wants me.

CHAPTER

FIVE

JORDAN

The next week drags by at a snail’s pace, and I’m in a foul mood. Last Friday night replays on a loop in my head, and I still can’t figure out what happened after we left Trudy’s.

Reagan and Mack got in the car. Reagan chatted happily while Mack stayed completely silent. When we got home, they went up to Rea’s room and stayed there. They didn’t come down to watch their movie like they always do. I sat in the kitchen until almost midnight, waiting for the sounds of footsteps. It never happened. She never came downstairs.

The rest of the weekend, she ignored me. Not one word passed between us, and I still don’t know why. She’s giving one-word answers when she responds to my texts—hours after I send them. It’s messing with my head, and I can’t concentrate in class. My practices have been off too; even my coach pulled me aside to make sure I was okay. I have to get a grip. Our families are getting together for game night on Saturday, so she won’t be able to escape me then.

I’m walkingto my locker after school on Friday when I see my sister talking on the phone. I rush over because I know she’s making plans with Mack, and I may just have to crash them.

“Are you serious? Of course you have to go!” my sister shrieks. I don’t hear Mack reply, but Reagan is absolutely beaming. “You’re not ditching me. You’re going on a date! I can’t wait to hear all about it Saturday. I love you too, Mack!”

I stop breathing. Mack is going on a date. My Mack. And it’s not with me. I have to rein it in and keep my cool. I can always take my frustrations out at the gym later today.

I hear my sister say goodbye, and I immediately pounce. “Who was that, Little Sis?”

She rolls her eyes and shoots me an annoyed glare. “First of all, Little Brother, I am older. Second, it was Mack.” She perks up at that last statement, so I decide to play the fool and get more information.

“Oh, cool. What are y’all doing tonight?” Please tell me I heard wrong…

“Nothing. Trey asked her out, and I told her she had to go, so I’m going to the away football game with the parental units. Do you want to come or do you have plans?”

“Uh, yeah. I’m hanging with the guys.” I don’t have plans, but I can’t be around anyone tonight. I didn’t hear wrong. The girl of my dreams is going on a date with Trey. Tonight.

A little while later, I still can’t wrap my head around any of it. Despite the fact that my few texts have gotten little to no response this week, I send Mack a message.

I heard you have a date?

Mack

Reagan has a big mouth. But yes, I do.

With?

Trey

Why?

What do you mean?

You didn’t come downstairs Friday. You don’t text me back and if you do it’s one-word responses. Now you’re going on a date?

Yes, I’m going on a date.

Can we talk Saturday? Just you and me.
