We all sat there, nobody saying anything. Ariceli and Tito were staring at each other like puppies. And Axel was watching them both with a sad, stupid smile on his own face.
“Are we really doing this?” Lulu asked. She, too, was now crying.
I looked about the room. A terrible sadness filled me. And anger. But for the first time in days, a strange sense of peace fell over me as well. Tito was absolutely right. Things were so much clearer when you realized you couldn’t survive.
Sometimes things just aren’t good, and that’s all there is to it.
I grabbed the marker from the counter, and I moved to Sam. I finished the sentence on his ancient falling-apart T-shirt.

The Rhythm Mafia Tapes. Scene twenty-seven.
We are outside the Lewis farm, and we see three different robots in front of the camera. The first two are floating, and the third, the largest, stands on the ground on six legs. The first unit, the smallest, is a cylinder approximately a half meter long. There is a grasping arm on the unit, but as we watch, it retracts into itself. The bottom of the machine contains a screen that flickers as if it is malfunctioning. This is called a hive queen unit from a new colony proliferation kit. The hive queens are designed to control all the other new colony construction bots.
It is important to note that hive queens use Traducible AI systems. This particular hive queen was somehow missed during the previous sweep by RSN Security, and it is believed this particular AI is the source of the .
The second robot is called a scout unit. It is approximately twice the size of the hive queen. It has two grasping arms. This versatile unit flies by using either insectile wings or jets in low-gravity environments. This model also includes four retractable legs that allow it to move rapidly across land. Despite their small size, these units are quite strong.
The third robot, twice again as large as the scout, is a drone unit that is oftentimes simply called a honeybee. These are the most common units, and they may be outfitted with multiple tools. Before the ban on Traducible AIs, these were the primary units used to rapidly build colony structures.
It appears these drones have been retrofitted to be used in agriculture. The end-of-life obsolescence built into these units appears to have been discovered and disabled, likely because .
The hive queen buzzes closer.
Roger:Lulu unqualified babysitter number one, what is it you wish to ask?
Rosita (off camera):Hi, Roger. I was hoping you could tell me a little about your duties and a little about your history.
Roger:Very well. I am a hive queen unit, and I am responsible for making certain the farm and the honeybees within are working properly. In addition, I am in charge of making certain Lulu and Oliver are given a proper education.
Rosita:Roger, do you know how old Oliver is?
Roger:Oliver is twenty-five years old.
Rosita:And when are you supposed to stop his school lessons?
Roger:Lessons are designed to end once a student completes their graduation. This typically happens between the ages of seventeen to twenty.
Rosita:So why hasn’t Oliver graduated? Or Lulu?
Roger:My programming forces me to keep them in school until the administrator allows me to graduate them. That has not happened yet.
Rosita:And who is the administrator?
Roger:Edward Lewis.
Rosita:Where is Edward Lewis?
Roger (pauses):Edward Lewis died five years ago.
Rosita:Don’t you see the issue here?
Roger:Without the administrator code, I am unable to graduate Lulu or Oliver.
Rosita sighs.
