“And, uh, what about Beau?” I ask, trying to sound as nonchalant as possible.

“Well, I heard that Christie asked him, so I imagine he’d go with her.”

“Christie who?”

“Christie Dunhill.”

“No way,” I mutter.

“Why is that weird? Those two fuck all the time.”

This has to be some kind of cosmic joke. Beau is screwing Christie? She was awful to him in high school. She was awful to everyone in high school.

I’m hitting jerks who bad-mouthed him, yet he’s sleeping with the enemy?

Fuck that.

“Sure, Jamie. I’d love to go to the dance with you.”

“Great! I’ll pick you up at seven.”

Beau comes walking back in as Jamie walks out. “What was that about?” He asks.

“Oh, Jamie just invited me to the Halloween dance.”

“What did you say?”

“I said I’d go.”

We both stare at each other for what seems like forever. Each of us wants to say something but not actually uttering any of it.

Finally, Beau says, “You know what? I actually need to get going. We can work on this more later.”

“Fine by me.”

Chapter twenty-six

Same Ol' Jo

Beau

What the fuck am I doing at the town Halloween party? I didn’t even want to come. When Christie asked me, I literally scoffed because it didn’t sound like a fun time.

But when I heard Jo say yes to Jamie, I changed my mind.

She and I were doing better. When we were working on that car, it felt like it used to, and I actually thought maybe there was something more happening between the two of us. Clearly, I was wrong because she said yes when Jamie asked her.

Jamie—the guy who will fuck absolutely anything with a vagina and a pulse. He’s a freaking dog.

Yet, Jo agreed to go out with him. I probably shouldn’t be surprised. She always did have a soft spot for jerky guys disguised as ladies’ men.

After I left the shop all pissed off, I told Christie I would go to the dance with her. I tell myself I’m going merely to keep my mind off Jo, but she’s going to be there, so I don’t think that will be the case.

Really, I said yes just to spite her. I know seeing me with Christie will stick in her craw pretty good.

Just when I was starting to let my guard down and think she’s changing for the better, she pisses me off all over again. When will I learn my lesson to just stay the fuck away?

Ever since she said yes to Jamie, I’ve made sure to keep my distance. Thankfully, Dylan has been working and was able to take over the reins of teaching her. She and I haven’t even had to speak.
