As we make our way back to my truck, it’s like the fog has suddenly lifted. My brain takes back over the reins and thanks God that I didn’t do something I would have regretted.
It’s time to get Jo home before I make a giant fucking mistake.
Chapter twenty-four
A Shrink would have Fun with Me
Beau
The following day, I’m thankful as fuck that I don’t have to go to work. While I do have to go to the dentist, which I hate, the dentist is preferable to the shop right now.
Jo is at the shop.
After last night, I have no idea how to act around her. I feel like I’m at constant war with myself.
Do I like Jo, or do I hate her?
Do I want her to stay away from me, or do I want to kiss her?
Is it possible to feel all of these things at the same time?
The whole thing is making my head spin and driving me fucking nuts. When I’m not around her, I am happy as fuck to stay away. The moment she is in my vicinity, she starts to break through, and I remember every single reason why I fell in love with her.
But today, I don’t have to worry about it.
I might need to evaluate the fact that I would rather have someone drill into my teeth than deal with my feelings regarding Jo Lawson. I’m sure a shrink would have fun with me.
After I’m done at the dentist, I decide to stop at the grocery store to grab some soup or something to eat for dinner. Okay, maybe not soup. It doesn’t sound very appealing.
While I stare at the fifty cans of what can only be described as hot meat water, a voice starts speaking from behind me.
“You know, it’s just soup. The decision isn’t life or death.”
I turn around to see Jack standing there.
“How was the dentist?” He asks. “Well, I guess it sucked if you’re picking out soup, huh?”
I laugh. “I mean, it wasn’t great, but I’m okay. I’m surprised to see you here.”
“Liz and Beth both have colds, so I’m picking up supplies. Then, I’m sleeping on the couch, so at least one of us can try to stay healthy.”
“Understandable.”
He runs his hand over his beard. “Hey, I never got a chance to thank you for picking up Jo the other night from…well, you know.”
“Oh, no worries. Not a big deal.”
“It is a big deal. I’m glad she had you when none of us were around. She really cares about you.”
I’m not about to argue with Jack while that may or may not actually be true, so I just reply, “She may be a little crazy, but shehas a knack for standing up for her family. I guess we can’t fault her for that.”
He has a bit of a confused look on his face, and I’m thinking maybe calling his sister-in-law crazy wasn’t the best of ideas.
He says, “Not just family.”
“What do you mean?”
“Well, you too.”
