Then it was his turn to pause mid bite. Something flashed over his face, but before I could identify what it was, it was gone. He shoved the noodles in his mouth and chewed quickly. "Or that," he replied, and there was something tight in his voice.

"I mean... it just makes sense, right? We don't even like each other, so there's not really a good reason to keep taking risks just for the sex. Right?"

"Right?" he replied. "Sure. No reason."

I couldn't tell if he was agreeing with me or if he was angry, and that was the main problem right there. We didn't get along, we didn't understand each other. There was no basis there for anything other than sex, and no matter how good the sex was, it was always going to be meaningless.

"I just think that's for the best," I said.

"I got it, Elise. You're right. Don't worry about it. I certainly won't."

“Good,” I replied back with a bright smile. “Then we understand each other.”
