Ashley shrugged. "Just the usual shitty guy stuff, but like amplified, I guess? He wanted to go to some party one weekend, but she had a work mixer she needed to go to and he showed up at her apartment afterwards, drunk and accusing her of sleeping around with her co-workers."
"What the fuck?" Dan said. "That doesn't sound like Jason."
She shrugged again. "I didn't see it, so I'm just saying what I heard from her. Apparently, he also would show up at her apartment at all kinds of random times, wanting to hook up when she had already said she was busy. She seemed really upset about it, so I don't think she was making it up."
"Oh my God," Britt said. "I had no idea. I'm so sorry I tried to sic him on you, Elise."
"It's not your fault. He didn't come off like that at all to me either, but it sounds like I dodged a bullet."
I glanced at Logan, and it was a mistake. He was sitting back in his chair, his glass of wine in one hand, a smug expression on his face.
Sometimes he was just impossible to like.
Unfortunately, the revelation about Jason didn't end the conversation about my love life. Feeling bad about having misjudged him, Britt seemed ever more determined to make sure I wasn't going to die alone.
"I have other friends," she assured me. "And I'll check to make sure they haven't done anything creepy before I introduce you to them."
I knew she meant well, but it was grating to have this be the focus of the meal. "Britt," I said. "It's okay. You don't have to set me up with anyone."
"Yeah, Britt," one of her other friends said. "She's a big girl. I'm sure she can find her own dates. What about someone you work with?"
"Well, I'm self-employed, so I only really work with myself. And," I hurried to add before someone chimed in with another suggestion. "Someone asked me out last week, actually."
Britt brightened considerably at that. "Ooh, I need the details!"
I sighed internally, but kept smiling. "He's nice. Owns one of the new restaurants in town. I took some pictures for his website."
"Do you think dating a client is a good idea?" Dan asked, arching an eyebrow.
I rolled my eyes at him. "I've got it under control, Dan. For one, it's one date. For another, I've been purposefully putting off giving him an answer until after I finish his edits. Since I just got paid for the last of them, I can give him a call when I get home."
Mercifully, the conversation turned to other things after that, and I was able to go back to eating in peace. Although, one last glance down the table did show that Logan looked anything but smug now, and I didn't know whether that was a win for me or not.
