Alistair looked at me and grinned. “Did you bring those earbuds I bought you?”

After Alistair booked my flight, a package of travel essentials mysteriously appeared at my house. A neck pillow, an eye mask, and noise-canceling earbuds.

“Of course I brought them.” I pulled out my bag, removing the tiny case that contained the earbuds.

He tapped a few buttons on his phone and pulled out his own earbuds, but instead of bright white, his were sleek black—and considerably larger.

“I got us an audiobook to listen to together.” He waggled his eyebrows.

Oh gosh. It was that kind of audiobook. One of my smut books.

Which we were going to listen to on an airplane. Together.

Was I going to join the mile-high club?

There was no way Alistair and I could both fit in an airplane bathroom. With his horns, that would be dangerous.

“You did not. What’s it called?”

“I did.” He flashed me a smug smile and tilted his phone so I could see the title. “Something about a salacious sex club.”

The title.

It finally clicked.

“Is this why you called me a good girl?” I whisper shouted.

He shrugged, his smile growing wider. “Maybe. Have you read it?”

I’d heard of it, because who hadn’t, but I’d been in such an alien romance chokehold that I’d yet to pick it up.

“No, but I’ve been meaning to.”

“Well, this is perfect then.” He leaned in closer. “Now be a good girl and put those earbuds in.”

I bit my lip and did as he asked. Suddenly, flying wasn’t all that bad.

EIGHTEEN

ALISTAIR

Being romantic is an effortless part of my relationship.

“So what do you think, sweetheart? Was the plane ride worth it?” I asked as my truck climbed up the mountain.

After a fairly uneventful flight and a quick stop at a drive-thru, we were finally on our way to my place.

The sun was just starting to set, coloring the sky above the mountains a blush pink that faded to the deep purple of night.

Pam stared out the window, her gaze fixed on the setting sun. “Of course it was. It’s beautiful. And I mean, it was already worth it because I get to see you.”

She leaned her head against my shoulder, and gods did I wish that I could hold her hand. Unfortunately, both of mine were preoccupied with the steering wheel. One sharp turn and a patch of black ice could send a vehicle toppling down the mountain. I’d have plenty of time to touch her once we got back to my place; it just wasn’t worth the risk.

Remi wailed and scratched at the mesh of his carrier. I felt bad for the poor guy. I was positive he had to pee.

“Don’t worry, buddy,” I told him. “We’re almost there.”

I turned down the side road leading to my house, and Pam gasped when it came into view.
