Prologue

Him

“Hurry, someone’s gonna see us. In here,” she whispers.

“Let them look.” He’s kissing her again before pulling back to stare at her with stars in his eyes. “I’ll need a witness to prove to myself this ever happened.”

She shakes her head while grinning. “Shut up before your stupidity makes me less drunk and I see the error of my ways.”

They’re fumbling through kisses and wandering hands down the dark hallway. His back hits the wall in her attempt to take control, but then he grips her waist, growling against her lips as he guides her backward, closer to the bathroom.

This is them in the throes of passion. Mixed with a bit of liquor, laughter, and mischief. The kind of abandon two lovers show when they finally submit to their urges.

It’s a moment for the two of them ...

I lift my hands, pretending to hold a camera and take a picture.

Because I’m watching.

And they’re completely oblivious to me.

They always are. I’ve become so intricately woven into the fabric of their lives that I’m only a thread in the tapestry of the background.

“Oh my god ...” He laughs against her neck as she snarks. “Open the door. If we get caught, I’ll have to claim some kind of deep psychosis.”

“I’ll show you deep.”

“Eww, why am I—”

He cuts her off, feverishly kissing her again. But she reaches behind herself, turning the door handle. The creak creates an urgency because she gasps, slipping inside quickly, only letting streams of light escape from inside.

They filter out, threatening to expose the things that hide in the dark.

So I don’t move.

Not even as she grabs the front of his shirt, pulling him inside, urging him slowly.

“Get in here already.”

With a cocky smirk, he glances over his shoulder.

Always the protector. Even in the face of danger.

Because I’m staring directly into his eyes, but his face is relaxed and unafraid. He’s looking straight through me.

With a click, the door shuts behind him, cutting me off from the rest of their fun. Leaving me alone in this small dark hall as I stare. Focused only on that door.

... The lovers.Slowly, as if I’m to savor what’s taking over, I close my eyes, mind bathed in the visions of their blood. It drips down the walls, pooling onto the floor, filling the room until I’m drowning in their death.

And when I open them, there’s only one thought.

Soon.
