“This.” He gestured between the two of them. “You are the one for me, Faith. We’re meant for each other. Look at everything that’s happened. I mean, for us to meet like this, someone up there must be pulling on the strings of destiny.”

“I hope you’re right.”

“I know I am. And I know what is to become of us.”

“Tell me.”

“Husband and wife. Marry me, Faith.”

Faith’s eyes popped open. She hadn’t expected that answer.

“You don’t have to say anything right now,” Grant said. He stroked a tangle out of her hair. “I’ve been around the world. Literally. I’ve dated a little. Seen a lot. There’s no one else. And there never will be.”

“Do you really mean it?”

“I do,” Grant said. “I should’ve asked you after graduation. If I hadn’t gotten into my own head, started worrying about what might happen or could happen…”

“Let’s not worry about it anymore. The past is the past.”

Grant smiled. “You’re right.”

“And my answer is yes,” Faith said, smiling. “I don’t need to think about it. I’ve waited a long time for you to ask. I should tie you down before you get another crazy idea and run away.”

“Not a chance of that happening. I will do what I should’ve done years ago and put a ring on your finger.”

“I want a Lark ring,” Faith said. “From Gregory’s Jewelers, on Main.”

“Then that’s what you shall have. Once we catch whoever is responsible for the attacks, let’s go back to Lark together.”

“Grant.” Faith kissed his palm, and then sat up. She hugged her knees to her chest. “There’s something I need to tell you.”
