“Fine. I love her. We’re not talking about me and Claire. We’re talking about you spending a huge amount of money to prop up the business venture of a woman who at the very least has a brother who helped screw you out of a hundred grand.”

He held his hands up in front of him, and only the fact that Eric was sure Luke genuinely had his best interest at heart kept him from throwing a punch.

“I’m done talking about this with you. I mean it, Luke. I want you in on this, but if you can’t help me, I can find someone else. I am not going to keep justifying myself to you or anyone else. I mean it.”

Luke opened his mouth to speak, and Eric stood, slamming his hand down on the desk before he could get the words out.

“No, no more. She’s lost enough to her asshole of a brother. I’m not going to let you take anything else from her. She’s not Caleb. She’s done with him.”

“How can you be so sure?”

He wasn’t about to justify things to Luke by relaying the phone conversation he’d overheard between Julie and her brother. Not this time. He was done giving it any energy. “Because she said so,” he said, turning his back on his friend and walking out the door.
