“Can’t. She’s meeting up with Chase.” I may have snarled his name.
“What the hell for?”
Harper likes my ex-best friend as much as she likes Amelia.
“Your guess is as good as mine. I even went by his office a couple of weeks ago and told him to leave Douglass alone. Guess he didn’t get the message.”
I could follow through on my threat, ruin his business and tarnish his reputation so no one in their right mind would ever hire him or his construction company. It’s what my brother Fallon would do. But unlike Fallon, my conscience would bother me. I’d be taking jobs away from innocent people who had nothing to do with our feud. It could also potentially hurt Douglass. And I will never intentionally hurt her again. So, for now, I’ll keep a close eye on his interactions with my woman—because Douglass is most definitely my woman—and will intervene if I need to.
“Want to use that GPSwhatchamacalliton your Tesla to find out where she’s meeting him and go spy on them?”
Looking over my shoulder, I gape at my sister that she would even suggest such a thing. Then again… maybe. No. Absolutely not.
She bursts out laughing. “The look on your face. But I’m totally in if you change your mind.”
“How does Bennett put up with you?”
I go through my wardrobe and select a fitted green button-down, wanting something a little dressier for my date with Douglass tonight than the T-shirts and Henleys I normally wear.
Harper takes the hanger from my hand and switches the shirt out with another one in a dark charcoal gray.
“This color suits you better.”
“Dress slacks or trousers?” I ask.
“Depends on the occasion.”
As soon as I say it, she’s going to freak out.
“I have a date tonight.”
I almost go deaf when Harper squeals and jumps up and down with excitement.
“I knew something had to have happened between you two when you texted to say you weren’t coming home.”
I vigorously rub my ear to help stop the ringing. “Nothing happened. Like I said, we just talked.”
But I wanted something to happen. It was almost impossible to hold myself back and not give in to the demands of my very insistent dick after holding her all night and watching those soulful hazel eyes open this morning to look at me all dreamy and soft. She smelled like sunshine and flowers. And all that thick, glossy, fiery hair. I wanted to tangle my hands in it as I kissed her until she was panting and breathless.
Harper’s disappointment is obvious. “Well, at least you scored a date. Where are you planning to take her?”
Douglass missed out on a lot in high school. On top of being shy, she was younger than everyone else, so she didn’t get invited to parties or football games or any of the other things Amelia and I would go to.
“I’ll be bringing her here. Candlelit dinner out in the garden.”
“Oh, nice. I approve. Very romantic. I’ll make myself scarce and give you two some privacy.”
Harper rifles through the items on the pant rack, searching for what she thinks will complement the charcoal gray shirt she selected for me.
“Going back to the whole Chase thing, were he and Douglass friends before?” she asks.
“Not that I knew about. She did tutor him.”
Harper holds up a pair of beige dress slacks, puckers her lips in contemplation, and promptly returns them to the rack.
“Do you think he’s why Amelia came to Mickey’s last night and attacked Douglass?”
Harper has a good point.
