He meets my worried gaze and simply replies, “Yes.”
Relief floods me, and my knees almost buckle. It’s over.
Fallon opens the door to show two armed policemen waiting directly outside.
“What’s going on?” Amelia retreats a step, then another and another. Not even the thick, caked-on makeup she’s wearing can mask her blanched, scared face.
I point up to the red blinking light on the ceiling. “Did you forget that all the private rooms have cameras with built-in microphones?”
Her eyes grow wide right before she explodes. “You set me up?”
Damn right I did.
When she tries to charge me, the policemen restrain her, made difficult by her wild thrashing. Fallon motions me over to where he’s standing, and I gladly go. We both watch as a screaming, cursing Amelia is handcuffed and read her Miranda rights.
I have to angle my head way back to look up at Fallon. Are all the Montgomery men tall? Jordan towers over me by several inches.
Fallon’s mouth quirks up at the corner. “I can take over from here.”
He doesn’t have to tell me twice.
“Even though I’m confused as hell and hope that Jordan explains why he called you, thank you, Fallon.”
He bends down and kisses me with brotherly affection on the top of my head. “You’re welcome. And he called me because we protect our family.”
My heart swells with emotion.Family.
I don’t give Amelia a second thought when she starts hurling obscenities and threats at me. I walk out of the room, past the other police officers waiting in the hallway to take my sister into custody, and straight into the awaiting arms of the man I love.
Chapter 54
I don’t hear the noise at the bar as I stare at the four-by-six glossy of the photo Chase took of Douglass and me which is now proudly displayed in the center of Mickey’s memory board. It almost feels like a déjà vu moment from the night Douglass reappeared in my life.
Fallon nudges my shoulder. “I’m happy for you. About damn time you found a good woman to settle down with.”
“Just following the example our sisters set. Wait until Sebastian, Holden, and Trevor meet their match. God help those poor women.”
The side of Fallon’s mouth crinkles at the corner, the only indication he gives that he’s amused. The man is more stoic than a stone statue.
“Hey, Fal. Thanks again. I owe you for what you did for Douglass.”
My brother has connections and means, both legal and not so much, to get things done. And I wanted this shit with Amelia over with as quickly as possible, which is why I reached out to him.
“Fuck off with that shit. You’re my brother. How is she doing?”
My eyes find Douglass across the crowded room.
“Surprisingly well, considering,” I reply.
A commotion of cheers goes up at one of the pool tables when Douglass pockets the eight ball. She turns to Mason, all triumphant smiles and opens her hand to accept the fiver he gives her. She’s been fleecing the guys of their cash all evening. I’ve already lost a twenty to her. She points her pool stick at Chase, and he starts racking the balls for the next round.
“Her aunt showed up at the police station,” Fallon says, checking his phone.
“I figured she would.”
When Douglass first informed Nat of what she planned to do, let’s just say, Natalie wasn’t thrilled. She canceled the rest of her trip and came back home. My home, that is, since she had no home to return to. She and Douglass fought and cried. A lot. It wasn’t pretty. Things are better between the two of them now. Not perfect, but better. Even after everything Amelia has done, Nat still feels like she needs to save her.
Paper money smacks the wood of the bar. “I need water. Want anything? Mason’s treat.”
