She stares wide-eyed at me. “You’re proud of me?”
Slowing down at a stop sign, I apply the clutch and brake and turn to face her. “So damn proud. Of your strength and your courage. How you fight for what you want and never give up. How you humble me with your kindness and your heart. Every part of you, Douglass Donnelly, is amazing.”
Her bottom lip wobbles as two tears escape down her cheeks. “Thank you.”
I lean over and kiss her pink lips and get hard as soon as her tongue touches mine. You’d think my dick would be satisfied after last night and this morning, but I don’t seem to have much control over him around her.
When a horn sounds behind us, we reluctantly break apart. I have to adjust myself before I ease off the clutch and get the Jeep moving forward.
“What time did Harper say she’d come over?” I ask, making a right at the T-junction.
My sister was a major pest this morning when Douglass and I finally came out of the bedroom. I’ve never heard her squeal so much as she did when she saw Douglass dressed in my gym clothes wearing sexed-up hair that my comb couldn’t tame.
“She said around five after she finishes up at the gallery. She’s meeting a new local artist today about a potential showing. Hey, Jordan, can I talk to you about something?”
Her abrupt change of subject has me arching a brow. “I hope you know you can tell me anything.”
She fidgets with a loose string on the T-shirt I gave her to wear. “Without you getting upset?”
Taking my eyes off the road for a second, I look over at her. “Depends on what it’s about. And the way you’re wriggling around in your seat doesn’t help. Does it have to do with Amelia?”
That’s the only thing I can think of that’ll make me fly off the handle. That and the thought of her with Mason. Fuck, he’s arriving tomorrow. She hasn’t brought it up, so I have no clue if she knows or not. Bennett told me not to say anything to Harper. He didn’t say not to tell Douglass.
She quickly replies, “It’s something Chase told me that involves Amelia.”
I thunk my head back against the headrest. Chase is also a subject I’d rather not discuss. “I’m listening.”
I can feel her eyes on me.
“Amelia told him she was pregnant.”
Douglass jumps in the seat when I burst out laughing.
“Of course she did.”
She glowers at me and uses our joined hands to hit me in the thigh. “Jordan, it’s not funny!”
“It kinda is.”
“Chase doesn’t know what to do. I told him to demand a paternity test seeing as he just caught her fucking the pool guy.”
I laugh even harder. I know it makes me an asshole to think, but my ex-best friend is getting what he deserves. Karma is a bitch with a capital K.
“Wise advice,” I tell her. “Because I highly doubt that she’s even pregnant.”
Douglass bends her left leg and tucks it underneath her in the most uncomfortable sitting position I’ve ever seen, and I’m impressed by how flexible she is. The positions I was able to put her in last night… damn.
“Why do you say that?” she asks.
“Because she tried that same shit with me when I called off the wedding.”
Complete silence, then “What?!”
I glance in the rearview mirror before making the turn onto Natalie’s street.
“When I demanded she see my family’s personal physician for an ultrasound and blood test, she refused. When I kept pushing and threatened to sue her for paternal custody, she admitted she made it up. So, it doesn’t surprise me that she’s doing the same thing to Chase.”
I get uncomfortable the longer Douglass doesn’t say anything.
