“You seem to be doing just fine. You. Knox. Talk. Spill.”

I give an exasperated sigh. “No, I haven’t seen Knox since we saw him outside the bar last night. And since I’ve been avoiding my phone all morning, I haven’t spoken with him either.”

Austin pulls his top lip under his bottom teeth and makes a “hum” sound, then spears some scrambled eggs with his fork.

“He’s not why I’m here at the hotel,” I clarify.

“Good to hear it.”

“And I’m definitely breaking things off with him.”

“Good to hear that too.”

“I saw JD last night.”

He puts his fork down. “Why? Why would you do that?”

“Because I can’t seem to stay away. Because I’m weak when it comes to him. Because I want to torture myself. Because I need answers. Take your pick.”

“Did you get any?”

My mind twists his question into something dirty and all I can think about is how I so very much wanted to get some from JD last night. JD’s feathery kiss on my shoulder was like a live wire to my core, desire and longing pooling in my center as every muscle zapped with electric energy until I was trembling and shaking with a powerful need that only he could quench. My body came to life when he walked up behind me, and as we stared at our reflections in the window, it was all just…too much. So many memories of the two of us naked in bed, tangled together like passion vines. How his larger, more muscular body fit so perfectly with my smaller, softer one. The look in JD’s eyes when he would hover over me, his biceps contracting and bulging as he slowly, oh, so very slowly, would make love to me, his kisses mirroring the way he thrust in and out.

“Oh my God! You’re daydreaming about fucking him right now, aren’t you?”

My head snaps up. “What? No!Noooo!” I say, unconvincingly, drawing out the ‘o’ way too long.

“I just lost my appetite,” he complains, covering his plate with a napkin.

“Stop being so dramatic.” I roll my eyes.

“Then stop being such a doormat when it comes to him. He left you, Rory. Gone. Disappeared without a word. And as soon as he comes back and bats his blue eyes at you, you cave.”

“I’ve done no such thing. This town isn’t that big, Austin. He and I will be seeing each other a lot. He’ll be working at the center for Pete’s sake. I can’t avoid him forever,” I argue.

“I can understand your point—”

“Thank you!”

He talks over me, “But, you’re still in love with him, Rory.”

“Ugh,” I growl. “I’ll get over it.”

Austin howls with laughter and I scowl at him.

“I will! Eventually. Someday. Not like anything’s going to happen between us now since he has a kid.”

“Pardon? What did you say?”

I thunk my forehead on the room service cart, making the silverware rattle. “He has a son. I met him last night when I went to talk to JD.”

“You’re fucking with me. There’s been nothing in the news or social media about a kid. He couldn’t have kept something like that out of the public eye for five years.”

“Well, he does, and he did. Funny thing, though. He looks just like Prescott.”

“Damn. I’m sorry, Rory.”

I wave his concern off even though I’m still dying inside at the revelation. “Let me grab my stuff and we can get out of here.”
