Knox sits down on the end of my bed. “That JD?”

“Yep.” I walk over to close the French doors that lead out to the balcony. The air is chilly this evening. “I thought you had already left.”

“About to. Just finished putting the bike in the bed of the truck. Devon and Trevaughn are downstairs waiting.”

“Oh! I want to meet Trevaughn. You guys have time for a quick introduction?”

“Sure, hood rat.”

I grab my fleece jacket from the closet. Knox waits for me at my bedroom door.

“Do you know who you’re racing tonight?”

Knox and I finally went on our ride this week. Of course, he did a little showing off on what he could do on his bike. It was really impressive.

“They tell us once we get there. Found out something the other day when I was working at the garage.”

“What’s that?” I ask as we descend the staircase.

“JD’s cousin is Elijah Barnes.”

“I have no clue who Elijah Barnes is. And when did you start keeping tabs on JD?”

“Like I said, it came up at work. It’s almost like six degrees of separation if you think about it. JD is related to Elijah who is engaged to Julien Jameson who is best friends with Ryder and Elizabeth. I work at Ryder’s dad’s garage and you’re dating JD.”

“Wait a minute. Are we talking about ‘Hoops’ Elizabeth? The girl Fallon has a thing for but she’s in love with someone else?”

“I see I’m not the only one keeping tabs on the house gossip.”

“Knox, hurry the fuck up!” Devon yells from the front of the house.

“Hold your damn horses. Aurora wants to meet Trevaughn.” Knox puts his hand on the small of my back as we walk toward to foyer.

“Damn, you weren’t kidding,” a guy says when we approach.

The doorbell rings and Devon opens it since he’s standing right next to it.

“I hope I have the right house,” Renee says. She spots me over Devon’s shoulder and pushes her way inside. “Damn, Rory. Did you get adopted by Daddy Warbucks?” she asks, looking around in awe. “I thought for sure I was at the wrong address.”

“This is my friend, Renee,” I tell the guys. “And you must be Trevaughn.” I hold my hand out to him. He looks at Knox before taking it.

Trevaughn is not as tall as Knox or Devon. His black hair is shaved on the sides and close-cropped on top. His eyes are either black or very dark brown, and he has the cutest dimple in his cheek when he smiles.

“Our boy can’t shut up about you,” he tells me.

“Oh really?” I say, looking back at Knox who’s scowling at Trevaughn.

“Okay, folks. Meet and greet is over. We need to go,” Devon announces at the door, holding it wide open. “Nice to meet you, Renee. We’ll see you girls at the Fields.”

Knox brushes by me, stopping for a second like he wants to say something, but he doesn’t. He and Trevaughn follow Devon out the door.

Renee pops her hand on her hip. “Okay, Rory. I call a what-the-fuck. Do you live here?”

“Yeah?” I reply with an inflection at the end.

She gives me a stern look. “This is the Montgomery place, isn’t it?”

I take a deep breath. “Yeah, it is. I kind of found out a few weeks ago that I’m related to them.”
