All I can think at this moment is that I just lost my shot at the Duke scholarship. My perfect student record I have worked my ass off for will be marred now. All because I lost my temper over some stupid bullshit spouted off by Mary Beth who I honestly couldn’t give two shits about.
“I understand,” I quietly reply, not caring anymore. It’s not like I can go back in time and make a different choice not to attack Mary Beth. In all honestly, I wouldn’t change what happened even if I could. She deserved the fat lip and bloody nose I gave her.
I’m holding my new phone in my lap when it vibrates. I flip it over and see that it’s JD texting me. Again. There are several I haven’t responded to since I’ve been stuck in here being lectured at for the last thirty minutes. Principal Stubbs made the guys go to their next class against their very vocal protests otherwise.
QuarterbackKing: Babe, text me. Let me know what’s going on.
QuarterbackKing: Sunshine, you okay?
QuarterbackKing: Are you still in the main office? Are you even at school?
QuarterbackKing: Aurora, what’s going on? Text me back.
QuarterbackKing: Fuck this shit. I’m heading to the main office to see if you’re still there.
“…and I have no choice but to suspend you.”
My head jerks up. “What? You’re suspending me?” My shock is apparent. I wasn’t expecting this.
“Any student caught fighting on school property automatically gets a two-day suspension. I’m sorry, Aurora. My hands are tied.”
Shit!
“Aurora, can you give us a minute, please?”
I jump at the sound of his voice. Turning around in my seat, I think my mouth falls open when I see both Fallon and Trevor standing in the open doorway of Principal Stubbs’s office.
“What are you doing here?”
Fallon walks inside like he owns the place. It wouldn’t surprise me if he actually did.
Trevor approaches where I’m sitting in front of Principal Stubbs’s desk. He bends down to my ear. “JD called my office and told me what happened. You okay?”
I nod yes.
“JD is waiting outside. Why don’t you go on out and sit with him while we take care of this, yeah?”
I nod again. He doesn’t have to tell me twice.
I grab my bag off the floor and stand up. Fallon is already speaking with Principal Stubbs, and the look on his face would make any normal person shit their pants. I slip out of the room and spot JD immediately. If he were in a crowd of people, my eyes would still alight on him. His massive frame is leaning against the wall next to the reception desk. He straightens when he sees me but he doesn’t move from his spot, so I walk over to him.
I step into his body, my fingers curling around the belt loops of his jeans. I look up at him and he touches his forehead to mine. And we just breathe.
“I’m going to be suspended.”
“Highly unlikely.”
“I won’t get into Duke.”
“Yes, you will.”
“Are you going to say the exact opposite of what I say?”
“Yes, I am.”
My shoulders shake with suppressed laughter.
“Is this what being your girlfriend is going to entail? Because I’ve got to tell you, I like the kisses, but this jealous-girl crap from your fanbase? Not so much.”
