‘I do drink, just not right now. Pregnant, remember.’
‘Doesn’t explain her.’
Elizabeth shrugs in response.
‘Let's get the others and debrief.’ I hurry us along the corridor, a fragile Fauna and a grumbling Elizabeth in tow.
‘I doubt we’ll find them.’ Liz pipes up from behind us.
Fauna and I both spin around.
‘What’s that supposed to mean?’
We’re both rigid and Fauna seems to have woken up at the thought of what Elizabeth's statement could mean.
‘Chill,’ Liz waves us off. ‘I mean, I doubt they slept in their own beds.’
‘Oh… ohhh.’ Fauna clicks on the second I do.
Not bothering to knock, I swing the door open to where they stay and gasp.
‘Those dirty stop outs!’
Fauna peeks her head under my shoulder, inspecting the empty room with me with a slack jaw.
‘All the stick they’ve given us about fucking Skulls and now they’ve all gone and done the same!’
‘They’re never going to live this down!’
I move into the room, motioning for the two of them to follow. ‘C’mon.’
‘What you doing?’
‘I’ve got an idea.’
Their room is bigger than ours, not that it matters since only Elizabeth uses it now. Two sets of bunkbeds stand against either side of the room, and a sofa bed like the one I used to sleep on sits in between them, pressed underneath a small window overlooking the stadium. Sunlight pours through the open curtains, illuminating the bundles of blankets on the floor beneath the unmade sofa.
I inspect the blankets, something looking off about them, and scream. ‘What’s tha—’
A hand waves from beneath the pile, along with some wispy strands of bright pink hair.
‘Shame, nothing but shame surrounds me. Leave, save yourselves!’
Chapter thirty-six
Liam
The ominous, gaping hole of the subway station looms before me. I’ve never been one to be frightened easily but I’ve got to hand it to them; building their group into these tunnels was a genius idea.
The whole spooky bedtime stories of a clown in an underground tunnel waiting to eat you come to the forefront of my mind. Unfortunately for me, a clown would probably be the preferred option to the mess I know I will be walking through.
For some unknown reason to us, groups in the city are obsessed with tunnels and specifically, in this case, it happens to be the subway tunnels. It’s a weird fascination but at least they keep it to themselves. We’ve never wanted to branch out intothe subway system and they’ve never tried to sniff around our stadium.
Although we still keep a lookout at the entrance to Ibrox. We may not fear them but over the years we’ve learnt the hard way about underestimating our opponents.
It’s what caused Ru to have a run in with them a while ago, leaving them with some bad blood to say the least. He insulted Malcolms intelligence which if you ask me was warranted since we all know his twin sister is the mastermind behind their operation. And some of the other lads were with him making Malcolm a little angsty when it comes to groups of us.
Hey ho, I'm not one that gets shy at being on a lone mission. If spending those winter months searching for Isla taught me one thing, it was to be even cockier about my survival skills.
