“Fine,” Juston groaned, then stepped up to the closet feline. With the butt of his weapon, he gave it a quick hit to the back of the head. The cat fell unconscious immediately.
Cal and Juston proceeded to knock out every cat creature in the room. Well, except the dead one.
“It would be easier just to kill them all,” Cal said.
Gemma shook her head. Maybe she was being naïve, but she didn’t want to be responsible for such carnage. Besides, Kange presented a mystery she couldn’t resist. If they killed him, she’d never solve it.
They crept out of the chamber and stuck to the shadows. Gemma hoped they’d make it all the way back to their ship without a fight, but she knew it was unlikely. They were almost to the docking bay when two guards appeared behind them.
“Halt!”
Cal turned around, and Gemma saw his eyes blaze red. “Punch each other.”
The cats turned and started raining blows on one another. Cal stumbled, and Gemma called out to Juston to help him. With the aid of his brother, Cal managed to make it back to the ship.
“We still have to do something about that shield,” he said, indicating the one blocking their exit. “And I don’t know if I can access my powers anytime soon.”
Juston frowned. “I’m tapped too.”
Gemma took a seat at the control panel. “Allow me, gentlemen,” she said, then proceeded to hack into the Vanfian system. In a matter of moments, the bay shield was penetrated.
“Shall we head home?” she asked, a sweet smile on her face.
Cal laughed, kissing her on the top of her head. “You’re a miracle, baby.” He sat beside her at the navigation controls, punching in their destination.
“Setting a course for Vartik. Let’s hope there are no more minor interruptions along the way.”
