Taking a deep breath, Cal moved toward the door.

The female hopped off the desk and came after him, pulling on his arm. “No,” she said. “Not finished. Please. Awaken!”

“I don’t know what you’re saying, sweetheart. But you can’t have what you want.”

She pulled harder, and he jerked his arm out of her grasp. “Awaken, please! More!”

Cal frowned. “There will never be more of that,” he said, adopting a harsh tone. “That’s done. Let it go.”

He turned his back and exited the room. His chest ached suddenly, but he ignored it. It was better to be stern now than to leave the girl with unreasonable expectations.

He’d made a mistake. Another in a long line of mistakes. But at least he’d gotten out of there before he’d done something terrible.That’s over. Finished.

As he walked down the hall, hunting for his brother, he wondered why it felt like things were far from over.
