“It’s the least I can do,” he said, taking her hands in his and pressing kisses to her knuckles. “I’ll be gone less than a week. Just give me the instructions.”
The fox’s fingers flew over his console, which spit out a card similar to the one he’d given Z with the bank information. “That should be all the information you need,” the robot said. “I suggest you get going. Every moment we delay is another moment the Hills gains on us.”
Z nodded. “Understood.” Before he headed for the door, he pulled Dawn into his arms. The kiss he gave her was scorching, full of the passion they’d shared last night. “I’ll be back soon. Be good.”
Dawn laughed. “I’m always good.”
No, you’re not, her inner voice reminded.Liar.
Then he was gone, out the door and into the dimness of Pallas.
Dawn slid to the floor, her lab coat pooling around her. “What have we done, Ladee?”
“What we had to,” the robot said with an edge to his tone that was usually absent. “It’s him or us, remember?”
Dawn nodded, all the while thinking,Why can’t it be all of us, together?
