“And if you happen to secure a sample while you’re playing along, then we’ll add to our advantage.

“Ladee,” she warned. “Stop talking about samples. You’re ooging me out.”

The robot cracked a smile for the first time that morning. “Apologies.”

“Still, in all these plans for seduction and counter-seduction, how am I supposed to get my work done?”

“Maybe he’ll be so exhausted by your acceptance of his advances that he spends most of his time sleeping.”

This time, Dawn’s laugh was genuine. “I don’t remember programming you to be so ridiculous.”

“That must be some of that ‘automated learning’ then.”

Even though he got on her last nerve, Dawn was glad the robot had a quick tongue. She wouldn’t change her furry little companion for anything.

“Okay, Ladee,” she said, leaning in while eyeing the door, expecting Z to wander out of the storage room at any moment. “Here’s the plan.”
