“That would be nice, but we should probably go back down,” Beatrice murmured, though she made no move to get up.

“Probably,” I agreed, but I didn’t want to let go of Beatrice.

She propped herself up on her elbow to look at me, her eyes soft in the dim light. “Did you ever imagine we’d end up here? With our families actually getting along?”

I tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. “Never. Not in a million years.”

“And yet here we are,” she smiled, leaning down to kiss me softly.

“Here we are,” I smiled, pulling her back against me. The party could wait a little longer. Right then, I was far too busy enjoying the company of the woman I loved.
