I’ve had several weeks to fully wrap my head around the fact that my best friend is fucking my sister. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for it, but I don’t need to see it right in front of my face. Gabe was a mess when he finally admitted to me what had started between the two of them on Valentine’s Day. I may have laughed in his face and shoved him out the door after her, but this might be too soon for me. Sheismy little sister after all.
Kate and Melissa have been talking, more like scheming, for this date night to happen. Kate’s been getting closer to my sister and I’m happy to see them forming a friendship. She even mentioned having Mel and my other sister, Everly, be bridesmaids. She’s an only child and always wanted sisters, and I’m more than willing to share mine.
Her best friend Millie is eight months pregnant and lives with her wife Alex in Indianapolis. From what I hear, her pregnancy is high-risk so they couldn’t make it out to our engagement party. Kate played it off well, but I know she missed having her best friend around to help with planning.
Tonight’s the dreaded date night and I’m trying not to be tense about it. Dreaded because I know how my sister is. She’s going to be madly in love with Gabe, fawning all over him, and being a nuisance. She gets like this with every boyfriend she’s ever had, and Gabe will be no exception.
My best friend and sister couldn’t be more different, which is what I think makes them perfect for each other. That and the fact that Gabe has been in love with her since he was a teenager. How Melissa never knew baffles me.
Gabe, on the other hand, I’m not worried about. He’s way more reserved than my obnoxious little sister, but I haven’t seen him in a relationship in years.
It’s going to be hell.
Kate’s been silent on what they have planned for tonight. She’s dodged my questions any time I’ve asked what we’re doing.
We’re in her car tonight, the sleek black sedan is much nicer than my dirt-covered truck. “Are you going to tell me what we’re doing tonight or are you going to keep me in the dark?”
The lights of the dash illuminate her features and the sly grin she has plastered on her face. She’s being mischievous tonight and I love this side of her.
Kate’s a rock. She’s steady, calm, and poised. But when she lets her hair down, that’s when the real fun starts. I think that’s why we work so well together. We’re two sides of the same coin.
“Nope. You’re stuck safely in the dark zone, babe.” She reaches over and playfully pats my knee. “You’ll like it though, I promise.”
I can tell from her dressed-down outfit that we aren’t going anywhere fancy. She’s got blue jeans and a white frilly blouse on with her long hair pulled into a low ponytail that has me wanting to turn around and head back home. The image of that pony wrapped in my fist while I pound into her from behind has me adjusting my pants.
“Pretty sure I’d rather be somewhere in the dark with you. But the car isn’t doing it for me. Not enough room.”
Her small hand smacks against my shoulder. “Tanner,” she chastises. “Oh my gosh.” She’s acting like she’s upset about it, but her tone is playful and there’s a toothy grin on her face. She loves it when I tease her. She might not say it, but she loves it.
“What?” I laugh. “You know you were thinking the same thing. I can’t control myself when it comes to you.” She laughs and shakes her head at me. “See, you know I’m right.”
Her phone dings, drawing her attention. I know the general area of where we’re headed but only Kate knows the exact destination. Taking any opportunity to touch her, my hand snakes across the console and rests on the inside of her thigh, squeezing lightly.
I’m an addict and Kate is my drug of choice. There will never be a time when I won’t want her. When I don't want to be near her. Touch her. It’s almost like there’s a sense of relief knowing that she’s here, that I can touch her, and that she’s real.
Sometimes I wake up and think she’s a dream, a figment of my imagination, because how could a guy like me end up with a girl like her?
The name Tanner and fuck up are synonymous. The little boy who ran around town blowing up buildings and shit? That was me. Not that I ever blew up a building, but I did cause a lot of trouble and dragged Gabe right down with me. My youth was spent being a dumbass. It’s a miracle I never ended up in a jail cell.
Thankfully I eventually found my place in my dad’s repair shop and learned that I had a knack for building and constructing things, sending me down a more encouraging path.
Kate was the exact opposite. She grew up in the upper middle class, attending social events and maintaining a certain look. Prep schools, Junior League, fundraisers, and cruise vacations were normal for her. I swear the worst thing she’s probably ever done is fall in love with a guy like me.
“Your sister and Gabe are already there.” She glances up looking at the street signs. “Turn right at the next street. There’s a parking lot just after the Mcdonald’s. Mel says they are parked under a streetlight at the back.”
Following her directions, we’re turning into the parking lot, and I spot Gabe and Mel in no time. Sure enough, there’s a parking spot next to Gabe’s pickup. My sister is tucked against his side and waves enthusiastically as I park.
Time to man up. This can’t be that bad. It’s just like High School, all three of us hanging out, but now my best friend and sister are together. No big deal.
Wrong. Big deal. Big fucking deal.
Has my sister always been this affectionate? And what the hell is up with Gabe? The man practically has hearts for eyes. At least before they were a couple he would try to hide the fact that he was checking her ass out, but now he’s doing it blatantly.
This is the kind of shit I never put up with from any of her other boyfriends. I shut this shit down. Fast. Only now we’re adults. Surely I can let this slide. She’s not a teenager with assholes pawing after her anymore.
These two are the reason I didn’t want to come out tonight. If I’m going to be spending time with my girl on a night out, I don’t want to be distracted by my sister and best friend groping each other. Which they basically are.
The adult arcade and bar the girls brought us to is a great idea. However, I’m not enjoying the view. Gabe has his hands on Mel’s hips as she shoots basketballs into the hoop. I’m trying to not look at them, but they’re standing right in my line of view.
