“You know, if you get much better than that, I might have a heart attack, Fee.”
“I won’t let you. I know CPR. You’re not going anywhere without me.”
His head rolls on the pillow and he smirks. “That’s good. I’ll make sure that I get certified as well. So I can take care of you. With both of us covered we’ll aways be safe.”
I snort and hide my face in his carved, muscular chest. Then I lift my head, serious for once. “I always feel safe with you, you know that.”
“I do know that.”
I close my eyes and lay my head down on his chest, listening to his heartbeat and settling. My breathing slows and I twist my fingers into his.
Everything goes still and quiet, just our breathing and I let all my worries go. Because I know that this man will make sure that I’m never hurt, always happy.
“I love you, Monroe.”
“Love you too, Fee,” he sighs and rests his chin on the top of my head.
Two days later, Monroe walks in the door and smiles at me, holding up a key to the other door. “Well, it’s all done. My dad sold me the shop and it’s all ours. Now we don’t need the wall. We don’t need to keep everything separate. We can make it everything we want.”
“Yay!”I scream and jump into his arms, peppering his lean cheeks with kisses. He holds me steady and laughs.
“You are a crazy woman. Where’s Harper?”
“Harper is right here trying not to lose her lunch.”
“Oops!” I drop down to the floor and Monroe grumbles under his breath.
“Yeah. Please don’t do that to me again. I don’t want to have to burn my eyes out just to keep myself safe from your lustful actions.”
Monroe snorts and stalks over to lean on the wall. “I’m sorry. I’m just so excited.”
There’s something behind Harper’s eyes that worries me. She’s been distracted and the last time she was like this it had to do with the ex love of her life.
It better not have anything to do with him or I swear I’m going to have a serious talk with her about her common sense.
As in what the hell is she thinking. The man’s married. He’s gone.
But Monroe whistles under his breath and when my eyes shift to him, he cocks his head. I shake mine. I’m not ready to talk about this. It’s not my story to give.
“So when are you planning on starting the construction?”
“As soon as your cousin and I can agree on a contractor.”
“Which we will talk about later,” I say, snuggling up to him. “So what are you planning on doing tonight? I’ve heard about the Valentine’s thing. Could be a good way for you to meet someone.”
“Maybe.”
But she doesn’t meet my eyes and I know what that means. She’s not going.
I wish I didn’t think she’s still hung up on Darius. But that’s a problem for another day.
“Let’s go look at the blueprints in your office,” Monroe whispers in my ear.
“Can you handle the store?” I ask her and she sighs.
“While you go to the back room to make out with your sexy new boyfriend? Yeah. I’m good. Just close the door.”
I giggle and he drags me back to my office, whipping around once we’re inside and closing and locking the door behind him.
