“We’re going to be parents.” She sighs and starts to cry with a smile on her face.

“Best Christmas present ever.”

Chapter Eleven

Rosario

“Well, hello, you two lovebirds. Congrats on the wedding. I hear you might have a bun in the oven. How exciting!” I try to suppress a giggle at the look of disgust Bruno is giving the midwife as she walks into the cabin with such enthusiasm.

She’s wearing a smock with multicolored tassels and beads that match her cheery personality.

“Hi, I’m Rosario.” I read to shake her hand, but she clasps mine in both of hers and brings it up to her forehead while whispering some words I don’t catch.

“Pleasure love. You can call me Sunny.” She drops my hand and swings a bag off her sholder narrowly missing me.

“Clearful!” Bruno growls as he closes the distance to stand next to me.

“Apologies. Oh, how I do love a fierce and protective partner. They make the best daddies. Come now. Let’s get the visit started. We’ll start with a test. Yes, I know you’ve taken one, but false positives are a thing. You pee, and you show me whereour guture mama can lie down for the exam.” She presses a cup intomy chest and shoos me away.

“This way.” I smile at the grumpy sound of myhusbands voice.

Once I’m done and back in the living room, Sunny has me lie on the couch as she first checks my breast, then my abdomen, before moving on to my internal exam. All while we wait for her test to turn positive.

“Good news, you’re pregnant.” She winks at me like she never had a doubt, while Bruno crosses his arms in a huff.

“Let’s figure out your due date and then see if we can find the heartbeat.” She takes out a lunar chart and asks me a series of questions.

“Hmm, might be too early, but let’s give it a go.” She pulls a small device from her bag and squirts a blue gel on it before placing the cold device on my lower belly.

“Are you excited to be first-time parents or terrified?” She grins at me while she moves the device around with a slight pressure that isn’t too uncomfortable now that the nausea has passed.

“Both?” I admit as I meet Bruno’s eyes.

She laughs at my answer as the room fills with a whooshing sound.

“Is that?” I can’t get my question out.

It catches in my throat on a happy sob as she nods with a smile on her face that shows just how much she loves this part of her job.

“Incredible, isn’t it?” We just listen for a few minutes, not talking and letting the reality of the moment sink in.

I’m growing a baby inside me.

“It’s the most important thing we’ll ever do,” Bruno says with tears in his eyes.

“Well, everything looks like it’s progressing famously! You’re early. By my calculations, we’re looking at a late summer baby. I’ll leave these vitamins and set you up for monthly checks until you’re further along. This is the most natural process in the world, so just go with the flow. If anything feels off, listen to your body and call. No matter how small or insignificant you think it might be. Trust your body.” She cups my hand in hers again and mumbles those words again before making the quickest exit I’ve ever seen.

“Fucking hippy monbojumbo.” Bruno locks the door, then stands to watch her pull away from the cabin.

“You found her.” I laugh at his reaction.

“I thought she was going to place flowers in your hair and sing old folk songs.” He shakes his head as I giggle at his reaction to the unconvinced midwife.

“Are our choices here that limited?” He rolls his eyes.

“Of course not. If you want to drive into Saint Moritz and visit a real doctor, we can do that.” I stand from the couch and walk over to where he’s still glancing out the window.

“I don’t mind, but we’ll keep that as a backup. What are you looking at?” I pull the curtain away to see myself and frown.
