“We have to cancel the wedding,” I say.
Ottar shakes his head and hands me the pants before plucking the letter from my hand. “Theo won’t have any of it. He trusts our security.”
“He wants to go ahead with this wedding even though there’s an obvious threat? Lilly could get hurt.”
“Lilly is not the one they’re after,” Ottar says. “You are. It was clear in the last letter, and this one is obviously stating a past relationship. The only person who would have a past relationship in this country is you.” He nods at me to change into my pants, so I unbuckle in front of him while he continues, “We’re looking into Brimar and his connections.”
That makes my head snap up from where I’m slipping on my pants. “What can he achieve from prison?”For treason, the asshole.
“It’s easy to have outside sources do the dirty work,” Ottar says. “You assisted in putting Brimar away, so him seeking vengeance, even if he has to pull some strings, makes the most sense.”
I strip out of my suit jacket and button-up shirt, leaving my upper torso bare.
I could see Brimar wanting to seek revenge. He’s been in prison for a few months now, which is well fucking deserved given what he did to us. But to be able to orchestrate something like this? I don’t know.
“Does he have connections like that?” I ask. “I know he slipped up right in front of me, but I’ve known him my whole life. I wouldn’t think he had connections outside our circle.”
“Yes, but he also has a vendetta against you, and he’s been in prison long enough to make connections. He’s a valid concern, and someone we’re monitoring.”
I slip the dress shirt on and then my suit jacket just as there’s a knock on the door.
Ottar moves past me to open it. “Lilly,” he says softly, then steps to the side, revealing my girl in a light-pink blouse and white trousers. Her hair is pulled back into a high ponytail, and her lips are painted the same color as her top. She looks so fucking good, especially as her gaze falls to my unbuttoned dress shirt, straight to my chest.
“Hey,” she says. “Uh, can I sit in on the fitting?”
“If you wish,” Ottar says. “Let me give you a minute. I’ll bring Jiminy in shortly.”
Ottar shuts the door behind him as Lilly walks up to me. Things are still tense between us. Not sure they’ll be normal until after the wedding, especially since we have to keep going to meetings with Elias.
Our last one was pretty simple. We had to write down the specific attributes we love about each other. There was no arguing, no fighting, and no walking out. It was an hour of us loving each other and just what we needed at that moment. As Lilly looked deeply into my eyes and told me she loved my confidence, loyalty, strength, leadership, body, heart, and soul, some of that anger and fear slipped off my shoulders. Not all of it, and now especially with another threatening letter, but her words somewhat soothed me. I believe it’s one of the reasons Lilly can look at me with love in her eyes right now, like she used to look at me in Harrogate. Nothing between us. Nothing messing with our heads.
“You look really hot,” she says as she closes the distance between us and smooths her hand up my abs. The feel of her warm palm against my bare skin sends a thrill up my spine. I’ve missed her touch.
“Thank you,” I say softly as I lift her chin and press a kiss to her rosy-pink lips. “How was your meeting with Theo?”
“Good. Just going over everyday things. Nothing I want to talk about right now.”
“No?” I ask.
She shakes her head. “No, I just want to admire my fiancé in his suit.”
That brings a small smile to my lips even though in the back of my mind, I can’t help but think about Brimar and his possible connection to the threats. But to avoid concerning Lilly, I keep my expression neutral. “Then take a seat, love.”
She smirks then lifts up on her toes and kisses the underside of my jaw. “Don’t mind if I do.”
She moves toward the couch in my room and slips her shoes off before pulling her legs into her chest and staring at me.
“What?” I ask when she smirks.
“You’re more cut, especially the V in your hip.”
“Yeah?” I ask.
She nods. “Been taking some frustration out during those morning workouts?”
“You could say that.”
“Well, it’s showing. I can’t wait to strip you down and drag my tongue up and down your body.”
