Chapter 10

Sarah's POV

I don’t know how, but after the Christmas party, I actually got Lincoln to come back to my apartment.

The first red flag was him standing at the door refusing to come in.

“Sit down. I just didn’t want to be alone after what happened at the party,” I say.

“It’s no big deal. I don’t think he’s going to fire you. You’re way too valuable and me working there is contingent upon you working there,” Lincoln says, and for a moment I feel his grace.

“That’sifyou don’t change your mind later,” I say, turning my back to put the kettle on.

“Why would I change my mind?”

“Oh don’t give me that, Lincoln.” I turn and look at him as he continues standing by the door.

I have to reach him somehow. Striding up to him, I gently take his hands in mine. I lick my lips and look up at him with the same look he fell in love with years ago.

“I thought that we were in a good place.”

“Professionally—”

“No, I don’t mean professionally, Lincoln.”

Hesitation.

“You divorced this woman.”

“Shedivorced me.”

“Yeah because youcheatedon her.”

“Yeah, withyou.Youwere the reason for that.”

“So you’re going to sit here and completely throwallthe blame on me?” I snap at him.

“Of course not. I already told you thatmostof the blame lies onmebut…”

“But what, Lincoln? Well now that she’s going to have a job at fucking Helion there’s no need for her to live with you, right? Just be honest. Just say you’re getting back with her,” I say, waiting for the answer.

“Why is this so important to you? I thought you said that we didn’t have to be in a relationship.”

“I mean… wow.” I lick my bottom lip, scoffing, putting the back of my hand against my forehead. Walking away from Lincoln for a minute, I feel my heart pounding before I turn back toward him.

“I like you, Lincoln. That’s obvious, I know, but… I don’t want to share you. And I thought this whole thing with Gabrielle wasover.”

Lincoln just stares at me like a deer caught in headlights, or like a drunk man who doesn’t know he’s drunk, swaying in the middle of the road.

“I never wanted to divorce Gabrielle.”

“Oh don’t give me that shit. When you were the most unhappy, it’s because you were married to her, and it’s like you’ve conveniently forgotten all of that.”

“I was unhappy because I was working late all the time and—”

“That isnotwhat you told me, Lincoln. You don’t remember all those conversations we had and all those late nights where you were justbitchingand moaning and complaining about your wife not understanding you? You roped me into that.”

His eyes narrow before he steps closer to me.
