Lana and Pete stand up, Pete heading to the door.
“Of course,” Lana says. “Just wait to see Rob and as soon as he clears you, you can go to your new room. Shayne and Harper already moved your things to the double suite.”
We get up and leave the office, and Pete gives us a quiet, “Bye.”, before he shuts the door on us.
Falcon moves to the wall across from the security room, and I move to lean against the wall next to him. He smiles at me.
“What are you looking forward to the most once we get to our new suite?”
“Seeing Harper and Shayne,” I admit.
“Yeah, me too.” He reaches for my hand.
I link my fingers through his.
We wait for the door to open.
When it does, my mother exits with her baby and with Jay.
“We’ll be a sec,” Falcon tells them. “We’ve got a new suite to move into. Shayne and Harper are already in the new place according to Lana.”
“I’m guessing it’s a bigger suite?” Jay asks.
“Two rooms,” Falcon says as he steps into the security office.
I follow him inside and a security guard I recognize closes the door.
“Hey,” Dr. Morgan says, giving me a small smile. “It’s been a while. How are you doing?”
“All things considered, I’m doing a lot better than the first time we met. How about you?”
“Oh, you know. Life and stuff.” He shrugs.
He’s a tall skinny guy with pale skin, and there’s something awkward about him.
His special talent seems like it would be better suited to a more outgoing person, at a glance, but it takes a certain amount of sensitivity to do what he does, and honestly, I don’t think anyone else could do it any better than he does.
“I don’t know if I really thanked you for the first time we met. You helped me remember my mother. I’m grateful for what you did for me. So, thank you, Dr. Morgan. I’ll never forget it.”
He smiles tightly. “It was nothing.”
“It was everything.”
Without it, I might not have found my mother when Owen heard her singing.
If we’d brushed that moment off as a sound picked up from a radio or something, she would still be trapped in that basement.
“I heard we need to have a pat down,” Falcon jokes, breaking the tension I caused with my gratitude.
Rob laughs. “Oh, no. I’m not doing that again.”
“Thank God,” Falcon says, holding out a hand to him.
Rob takes his hand and looks him in the eyes.
Falcon is still for a few moments, not blinking.
Then Rob lets go and nods.
