Chapter Seventy-Three
Falcon
Digging a trench for the new fence occupies me better than anything else really could. I’ve always been that way. Sweating my way to the end of a day was always more fulfilling than sitting behind a desk, but this isn’t the answer to my career problems.
It’s a one-time thing, and even if it wasn’t, a city is no place to raise a family.
I stab the spade into the dirt to take a minute of rest.
This work feels good, and it’s perfect for now, while I’m trying to stay close to Robin.
I can think about what comes after that once it’s actually an issue.
Peeling off the glove on my right hand, I glance up at the academy building.
She’s in there right now, doing her job in the kitchens.
While I’m out here, close to her favorite place on the grounds, breathing in the scent of the roses she was admiring yesterday.
The kitchen’s main entrance isn’t far from the glass fronted doors that lead into the corridor.
I could be there in a dozen steps … Well, maybe more like twenty.
Still. It’s near enough to fantasize about.
I wonder how far I would get before the nearest security guard stopped me.
He has his back to me now, but every time I so much as breathe in the direction of the building, he turns his head and glances right over here.
I could take him.
That’s not in dispute.
Respecting Lana’s wishes is getting harder than I can stand.
I turn away from the academy, stuff the glove under my arm and take my phone out of my pocket. The battery is red when I turn it on. I should have asked Owen about charging it.
I send a text to my mates, giving another quick update to our group chat, and asking if Shayne’s had a call about meeting Robin tonight yet.
I gave Owen his number to give to Lana.
He promised he’d pass it on.
Now that the threat is being dealt with, there should be no reason to deny Shayne access.
A flurry of messages light up my screen, coming in thick and fast.
Harper, first. When will you be back?
Then, Jay.When can we all come stay there?
Shayne’s message is last.Shadow confirmed it. I’m gonna come early and visit him first.
Harper adds,Can’t we come with him?
I sigh as I look at the messages.
I’m glad Shayne’s coming as planned, but I wish I had better news for Jay and Harper.
