“My mate lives in the academy. It’s absolutely my problem.”

I stare him down and he sighs again.

“Look, I know Shayne’s part of your pack and he’s the only family Shadow still cares about, but that doesn’t mean I’m going to let you do whatever the hell you want. You lied about your intentions to get into Goldcrest, and until Robin’s as sure about you as I am about my mates, I don’t trust you one little bit.”

“I’m willing to do things your way,” I start.

“I know you’re not going to leave,” he cuts in. “But you’ll do things my way or I’ll lock you in the academy’s basement until I can get CCPD to come and arrest you for trespassing.”

I blink at him. “You’ll what?”

“You heard me. We don’t know when this guy is coming back, and the fastest way to get back to that hole in the fence is if we drive back to the academy so that’s what we’re doing.”

He leaves the house, and I follow, closing the door behind me.

“So, that’s the plan?” I ask as we move toward his car. “We wait for him to come to us?”

“Did you have any better ideas?” he asks, raising an eyebrow as he glances at me.

“No, that seems like the right one.”

Chances are the would-be intruder will be tired by the time he walks back to that part of the fence.

We won't be. We can take him by surprise.

Whoever the hell he is.

Chapter Sixty-Six

Falcon

The guards are out in force when we get back to the academy. They’re hidden in the shadows where they can be, but it’s clear that this threat is being taken seriously.

Owen parks at the front of the building, but he leads me through the dirt carpark, into the gardens, and from there toward the cafeteria building.

It’s dark out already.

We don’t know when this guy will come back, but he’s got to have some idea how tight the security is at Goldcrest. He found a spot that no one would even have seen if I hadn’t been out in the gardens with Robin, headed toward the cafeteria.

Considering that building isn’t used very often, it was a good spot to target.

The trespasser is just unlucky.

Whatever he wanted to gain entry for, he’s going to be sorely disappointed.

Owen talks with the guard by the front of the cafeteria before we move around the building to the gap in the fence. He looks at me, his expression stony as we stop in front of it.

“We’re going to find a hiding spot and wait quietly until he shows. That means no talking.”

“Got it,” I mutter.

I wasn’t planning on conversing with the guy, but whatever.

He feels he needs to be clear about the rules.

It’s not gonna kill me to agree to them.

He motions to me to go first.
