“You too, Cara. It was nice meeting you.”
I let Robin choose the table, and she picks one of the furthest from the counter.
Cara won’t be able to hear our conversation, unless she has the ears of a bat.
“Seems like your co-workers are nice,” I start as I set the tray down on the table.
“They are. Everyone seems happy here. It’s hard not to be. We’re well taken care of.”
She sits down and I place her plate in front of her.
“You don’t sound so happy about that.”
She looks at me, and I think back over what I just said.
“Areyouhappy here?” I ask, realizing I might have uncovered a truth she isn’t even aware of.
She picks up her fork as she frowns slightly. “Oh. Uh, I like the people and everything. My suite is nicer than apartments I’ve seen on TV. I’m pretty well taken care of. Can’t really ask for much more than I’ve got. I landed lucky here.”
It’s clear that she’s grateful for everything she has now, but that doesn’t answer my question.
I don’t think she even knows she’s avoiding answering it directly.
I won’t press any further.
Not while she’s in a place where she’s so well protected and not while she’s still on the fence about becoming a part of my pack.
All her answer did was confirm that this isn’t where she belongs.
I already knew that, because she wouldn’t be made for us if she was supposed to stay here.
She doesn’t know it yet, but she will, when she’s ready.
Chapter Fifty-Seven
Robin
The food is delicious, but I’m a little too distracted to concentrate on eating. Having an attractive Alpha sitting across the table from me is only half of the battle. Being around Falcon makes it hard to remember how to do basic things. It took me a minute to remember silverware exists, and a few more to remind myself to take a bite once I finally picked it up and speared one of the veggies on my plate.
He eats with gusto, and it’s kind of fun to watch.
The sounds he makes …
They’re not unlike the sounds he made when we were in the forest alone together.
My face warms as those memories flood through me.
The soaring feeling it gives me is unlike anything I’ve ever felt before.
I think I’m starting to understand the appeal of being with an Alpha.
Of course, it helps that he rescued me, and that he seems to be so into me.
I put my fork down, and he looks up from his meal.
He swallows and puts down his own silverware.
He takes a sip from his glass of water.
