“It’s a perfectly good lunch,” Shayne says.
“It’s okay, I guess,” Harper says, before he proceeds to demolish the rest of the plate of chicken wings.
Shayne smiles at me, and we eat in silence for a few peaceful minutes.
Then, Falcon comes out of the bedroom.
And all eyes are on our lead Alpha.
He sighs as he closes the door behind him.
Damn. That doesn’t look like good news.
“So?” Harper asks.
“Lana’s going to let me visit Robin tomorrow,” he starts.
Shayne glances at me, and I know we’re both having the same thought, before he asks for clarification. “She’s lettingyouvisit Robin? As in, only you?”
Falcon nods, confirming the bad news.
“What?” Harper gasps.
I put an arm around our Omega while Falcon clears his throat.
“Lana’s acting as her guardian right now. She doesn’t like that we lied to get into the academy, and it looks bad that we didn’t tell her straight away that we have a true mate bond with Robin.”
“But you didn’t know …” Shayne starts.
“That doesn’t matter. We play by Lana’s rules, no exceptions.”
It’s obvious he’s not happy about that, but he’s not clenching his jaw.
The anger he was stewing in before he knew Robin was meant for us is gone.
He’s been calmer since he got home last night, and if he stays that way we can get through this, whatever the head of Goldcrest decides to throw our way.
“So, you get to see her alone to tell her the good news, then.”
All eyes fall on me, and I move closer to Harper, to put a comforting arm around him.
“I do,” Falcon murmurs, brow furrowing as if it’s something he’s only realizing now.
“Well, it’s fitting, I guess,” Shayne admits, giving Falcon a wry smile. “You’re lead Alpha. You’re also the one who helped rescue her before. If we had to pick one of us, it would be you.”
He’s hiding his envy well, and he’s not wrong.
“Just don’t mess it up,” I add, drawing Falcon’s stare back to me.
Shayne snorts, shaking his head before he picks up a sandwich from the tray.
“Mess it up?” Falcon asks, raising an eyebrow.
“No!” Harper exclaims, his voice muffled against my shoulder before he turns back to face our lead Alpha. “He saiddon’tmess it up!”
I can’t help but laugh. Shayne joins in, and Falcon actually cracks a smile.
“I won’t mess it up,” he promises Harper, who’s still apparently in a serious mood.
